for those that water broke on it's own..

dumb question but what does it feel like? is it a gush or a trickle?

I was induced with my first so I didn't have that experience..who knows this time around what will happen so I want to make sure I know it's my water breaking and not just peeing on myself lol

so did your doctor tell you to go to the hospital right away or did you have some time?

thanks

Re: for those that water broke on it's own..

No time. My water broke on its own for 2 out of 3 of my children.
With #1 I was en route to the hospital and delivered about 20 minutes later - if that.
With #3 I told the nurse I go from 0 to 60 once my water breaks. With that, it broke and I was ready to push. A couple of pushes later and within 5 minutes she was born.

With my 2nd child I was induced b/c he was struggling. They broke my water at 7cm and I was ready to push a few minutes later. He was born within 10 minutes of my water breaking.

I'm not sure I'm the "norm". All these deliveries were epi free as well.

When mine broke it was a few large gushes, the first being the biggest. I had about 30 seconds "warning" beforehand. I had a strange sensation and then it all came out. I had to go to the hospital immediately because I was GBS + but I actually delivered the baby about 3 hours from the time my water broke, so I wouldn't say it was immediate.

I always say that mine broke like it breaks in the movies lol I went to the bathroom & felt/heard what sounded like a pop (weird, I know) so I thought that I was losing my plug. A few minutes later I had a BIG gush in the other room & thought that I had wet myself. I continued to leak & have subsequent big gushes for a few hours afterwards. At first I honestly thought that I had peed myself, but the constant non-stop trickling was a clue...I also made my DH come into the bathroom to check it for his opinion of what was going on Chat Icon

I was over 2 weeks early & I had no contractions when it broke. When they finally did start they were inconsistent for most of my delivery. I wanted to try for a drug-free birth so based on my situation, I stayed home for 7 hours after it broke before I finally headed into the hospital. I called my OB about 5 hours in & based on my situation she even told me not to rush in yet.

In the end I wound up losing so much water that I needed what they called an "amnio infusion" during labor...it was basically just another IV bag to, from what I understand, add more water to the sac during labor.

Re: for those that water broke on it's own..

Mine broke while I was asleep. I woke up to a small warm trickle and knew I hadn't peed myself, since I never did that the entire pregnancy, why would I just suddenly pee now!!?? I waited another min, told dh that I thought it broke but wasnt 110% sure. A min or 2 later more leaked out, so I def knew it wasn't pee. But it wasn't like a huge waterfall thankfully. I showered and got ready for the hospital an hour or so later with a pair of dh's boxer briefs and a towel stuffed in them, threw on sweats and left. That was 7 am... She was born just after midnight

Mine broke with my first.
I was actually at the hospital already and I thought I had to pee so I went to the bathroom and nothing came out. As I was walking back to the bed to be examined, it broke. It was a GUSH.
I have heard of it coming out more like a leak as well, though.

Re: for those that water broke on it's own..

Leak...

Straight to hospital due to risk of infection once it breaks. AJ was born (cut out) 9hrs later. She was always breech so she was always a C/S.

ETA: I woke up to pee. I took a pee then felt kinda warm, Extra wipes but still sorta warm. Went to bed and realized I was slightly wet. That's when I knew. Called the doc they said go in. Super slow leak at first. By the time we got to the hospital (cause someone warned me to poo first) i was a steady trickle sitting on a towel.

Re: for those that water broke on it's own..

mine was a huge gush that never stopped, and I went to the hospital immediately because it was tinged with blood. They said that was totally normal, but it scared the crap out of me. I didn't have any contractions and wasn't dilated at all, and ended up having a c section after 24 hours without much progress.

Re: for those that water broke on it's own..

Mine was a trickle while I was sleeping. It continued to trickle throughout the day(while in hospital) never had a gush. I never went into labor on my own, was induced and lastly DS was born via c-section. Just realized I didn't answer your question, my doc had me go to hospital immediately since my strep B results were not in yet so he had to treat me as if I were positive.

It was a gush and it was very noticeable and it was at 2:15am. I had no contractions so I chose to clean up, then take a nap and see what happened. I woke up around 5/6 and called the Doctor and he said to make my way in. I got to the hospital around 8 and was put on pitocin for the entire day.

It was a gush while I was sitting n the bath tub. I had been having contractions and was hoping the bath would help. Once my water broke they really intensified and I didn't have any break with my contractions after that.

Got up to go to the bathroom at around 2am. As went back to my bed I felt a strange sensation like I knew something was about to happen (hard to explain) I got up really fast and a huge gush came out (like I spilled a large bucket of water on the floor. There was no mistaking it!! I called the doc and she told me to come in because of risk of infection but not to rush because it wasn't an emergency. When I went in, they couldn't feel the baby moving and I had no contractions. They told me I had "grossly ruptured" No kidding!! lol It meant that basically I had lost most if not all of the fluid. I ended up with a C/S because I was not progressing and her heart rate was inconsistent. Good luck!

DS1- my water broke at home with my first contraction. I left for the hospital an hour later after getting ready. It was slow mini gushes with each contraction.

DS2- broke at home in bed. I had only 1 painful contraction earlier that day and nothing until my water broke. It was a bigger gush the 2nd time. I got ready and left for the hospital an hour later.

Re: for those that water broke on it's own..

Mine was a definite pop while i was in bed, I leaped up and it gushed all over and then kept gushing out in spurts for the next several hours. I definitely had to keep a towel between my legs for the ride to the hospital and couldnt really get ready, like take a shower etc becase it was all over my floors! so so glad I was home when it happened and not out because mine was alot of water and really all over the place.

My water broke with my first. It woke me up with a pop and then a gush. Like someone turned on the garden hose! The OB said it was a strong gush like that because he was breech and his head wasn't down to slow the flow, so to speak!

The second was while I was in labor at the hospital. I was already 7 cm and the doc broke it for me to speed up things. It looked like a big crochet hook Chat Icon but didn't hurt or anything. Just got really warm and wet!

Re: for those that water broke on it's own..

Mine began as a trickle, and then kept coming. It did begin with a pop that I felt, and think I even heard. I called the OB, they said to come in. He checked it had broken, but I had no contractions. This was around 11:00 am. He told me to head to the hospital at 4. We went out to eat and run some errands, and arrived at hospital around 3/4. DS was born next morning at 9:09 am.

Re: for those that water broke on it's own..

My water broke for 2 out of 3 babies.

#1 I coughed and thought I peed myself but wasn't sure because it felt a little different. little more leaks after that and then a gush (while over toilet luckily). Another big gush when I got to the hospital and was examined. Went straight to hospital (I had time to pack myself and get organized was in the hospital maybe an hour after the first trickle) because I had strep b. 3 weeks early, no regular contractions, had to get pitocin to start things up and long labor - over 12 hours in total.

#2 - my water didn't break until I was 9 cm

#3 trickled and kept trickling. Was 38 weeks and not sure if I peed myself again. Never really gushed but something told me it wasn't pee. Contractions about 2 minutes apart started right away. Went to hospital and was about 5 cms. Again got to the hospital maybe an hour or so afterthe start. Knew this one would go fast so tried to get there sooner but had to wait for someone to get there to watch my other kids and it was the middle of the night when it occurred. Had the baby about 3-4 hours later or so.

Re: for those that water broke on it's own..

I woke up at 5am to go to the bathroom. When I went back to bed and lied down I heard a pop and a huge gush of water came out of me. It felt like someone opened a faucet between my legs! Chat Icon I knew immedeatelly what was going on.

I got up, went back to the bathroom and just set there with water gushing down the toilet. (Sorry, TMI) I grabbed a pad, woke up DH, asked him to call my doctor and went into the shower. The doctor said to go to the hospital and we were there by about 6:30am.

I was progressing very slowly and the residents started circling me like vultures telling me that they need to inject me with pitocin right away, without even letting my body TRY to do it on my own.Chat Icon Luckily, having read here and in pregnancy books how many pitocin inductions end up in C-section, I vehimently regused and what do you know, started progressing on my own and my beatiful first born came out! Chat Icon

Incidentally, with my second, my water never borke and my doctor had to break it for me when I was already on the table in full labour mode with my legs in stirrups! Chat Icon

Mine broke with my first DC while I was sleeping in bed. I felt a trickle and thought I peed myself. I walked over to the bathroom and kept leaking. Once I sat on the toilet I heard a pop and there was a BIG gush. Thank goodness I made it to the toilet!!

My OB said to go straight to the hospital but I took a shower and ate breakfast first.

Re: for those that water broke on it's own..

With dd my water broke at 37w5d. I heard the pop sounds and than a gush. I than leaked for my entire 22 hrs of labor. I had a lot of amniotic fluid throughout my pregancy though. When I called my dr she said to eat, shower and than come to the office to make sure it was my water because as she said "someone actually urinate and confuse it for their water breaking". I stayed home for about an hour and 1/2 went to the office where they confirmed it was my water, and they saw the baby had meconium and I was strept b positive so they sent me right over to L&D. My contractions didn't start until I started to walk through the hospital doors.
