Need help with brushing teeth!!!

DS is a little over 2 and has a SPD and motor oral issues. He is really sensitive to having stuff in his mouth. He is ok if he is holding the toothbrush and "doing" it himself. But that isn't enough! I have tried a washcloth. He just chewed on it. I tried using the fingertip brush.. Got BIT!!! Ouch!!! I have tried singing and having him watch us brush our teeth. I tried to hold the toothbrush with him!! It is a losing battle. Most days he has to be held down so I can get in there!!! Is there anyway to get this done without a battle. I am so afraid that he i going to get cavities.. I am thinking of taking him to a pediatric dentist to just get help! Does anyone know of a dentist who deals with children with special need? Thanks

We have 2 battery operated toothbrushes. Thomas and Cars... It helped for a bit, but the last 2-3 months have been the hardest.. Thank you.

Re: Need help with brushing teeth!!!

We went to the Dental clinic at Stonybrook. They are used to special needs children. And they are cheap if you don't have dental insurance.

My DS hates having his teeth brushed and also has mouth sensory issues. Have you tried a NUK brush. They make a set of 2 - one is round all the way and the other looks like a tooth brush but its made out of rubber rather than the bristles. My feeding therapist recommended this and its seems to be better-. I got it at BRus.

I will check them out.. We have one of those brushes too. Our speech therapist gave it to us.. He usually just chews on it.. She gave us one of those sponges on a stick and he seems to like that. I may try and brush his teeth with that tomorrow. Thanks for all the information.. I got to get something that works...

Re: Need help with brushing teeth!!!

We started out slow. We started with just a regular toothbursh and brushed his cheeks with it, then slowly got in his mouth. We rewarded him each time we got the toothbrish in his mouth.
Then we went to a batter one, and the same thing by brsuhing his cheeks.
This whole process took us months, and now he is GREAT at it.

This is where we go, after seeing a multitude of special needs dentists. Fortunately they take our insurance also. I can't say enough about them. Very patient, got the work done without sedation like the other dentists recommended. They put sealants on many of the teeth, to prevent future cavities. Something the other dentists never even mentioned! Probably because more cavities = more money for them!

Kidsmiles in Holbrook deals with special needs. They have other locations as well. Unfortunately they said they would have to sedate to fill some cavities. Something that cost like $850 for every 15 minutes, and they don't take insurance for that. Insane! I asked if we could try without it, and they basically referred us to SB or LIJ Cohen's, which doesn't take our insurance, but I hear they are great too, and closer to you.

Unfortunately some kids will never warm up to the sensation of brushing though. The vibrating toothbrushes make it worse in our experience.

Re: Need help with brushing teeth!!!

The electric toothbrush worked for us, but it was actually his special ed teacher that got him to start using it. Our dentist said that many kids with special needs won't use the electric one because they don't like the vibrations.

We do still have a reward for toothbrushing. He will do it, but it is still a battle or a negotiation for us every day.
