Big update on DS- he started PreK last week
So for anyone who remembers, we were "battling" our school district over DS's IEP. He just turned 3 last month and was aging out of EI.
Long story short, 2 weeks after his 3rd birthday, the district called us in for another IEP mtg and agreed to just about everything we asked for (and were initially turned down). So last week he started in our local, full day self-contained program (not our first choice of settings but they're giving him the related services we initially requested so we're ok with it for now) and is so far adjusting well. We turned down the bus service as it's in walking distance so I've been walking him to school with the baby in tow every morning. He's become attached to one of the aides in the class so he's hesitant when we get to the door until he sees her then he runs in and gives her a big hug.
It remains to be seen how much he progresses in their program but I'm trying to be optimistic. He likes it and comes walking out with a smile on his face and that puts a smile on my face. I'm having a harder time adjusting to not being "there" with them all day as he receives services.
While it took DS 2 weeks without services for them to come around, I'm so happy that DH and I stood strong and fought for what he needed. And what makes me smile even more is that his teacher called me at home after his second day and said, "you were right, he does need a 1:1 and individual speech". I don't know why it matters but I felt validated, like, see, I KNOW my kid. While it blows that he does need all these related services, the CST trying to make him seem like something he's not, and make me seem like the crazy mom just made me so angry, and I feel like *hopefully* I'll be taken a little more seriously going forward with our concerns.....maybe.
P.S. In other HUGE news, DS peed on the potty for the very first time this weekend!! I don't think we're anywhere near training status but he's at least showing a little interest, finally! No awareness yet of himself and actually going, but at least he's not running from the toilet screaming when we bring him near it.
