japanese hair straightening & pregnancy
i am pregnant (obviously ) and i am thinking about japanese straightening my hair for the ease of it all (falling into the mommy routine and with another on the way, i fear it will only get worse ). anyway, my sister went and saw a sign that said 'if you're pregnant let us know' and when i called, they said it was "safe."
does anyone know why this is considered to be okay but the keratin treatment isn't or has anyone done it?

Re: japanese hair straightening & pregnancy
It is 100% not safe. Keratin is actually less safe than Japanese but both involve lots of chemicals. My hairdresser won't even consider keratin since i have been actively ttc and Im actually getting my japanese straightening done this weekend so when I go for my iui in a month the chemicals are out of my system.
Wait to you give birth and are done breast feeding (if you are planning).
I dont know if you've ever had either before but the chemicals are harsh.

My Dr is so laid back with what we can do and eat and she is 100% against this.

Re: japanese hair straightening & pregnancy
Keratin is definitely not safe, not even while BFing. Especially the versions that have formaldehyde (which most do even if they claim not to). This is because everytime you apply heat to your hair, it gets released again. The keratin stays on your hair and gradually washes out, as opposed to JHS which grows out.
Before getting preggo I was using the Coppola keratin treatment which has been tested and has levels of formaldehyde well below the legal limits, but my hairdresser will not do it while preggo/BFing.
Hair Club IB has a new organic treatment that's supposed to be so safe you can eat it, but I'm still hesitant to do it. And you would have to make sure no one else around you is getting the keratin so you don't breathe it in. Sucks because I'm so tired of flat ironing lol.

Re: japanese hair straightening & pregnancy
please dont' do it..my sister in law had it done while she was pregnant and lost her child at 5 months. Don't know if it was related but it's still better not too.

Re: japanese hair straightening & pregnancy
i AM a hairstylist and i am preggo and i HATE being around them...pisssses me off actually bc its when its heated up that these proceses release bad chemicals.
now i am around chemicals alllll day which blows too...but i would never get one or do one while preg.
that said....its much safer to have it done to you once for 2 hours than for US stylists to be around it allllllll day long!!!
suck it up and dont do it :)

I wouldn't do it. If you've waited this long, you can wait until after the baby arrives. Unless you BF, I wouldn't do it then either.

Re: japanese hair straightening & pregnancy
I saw the hairdresser at my salon wearing a gas mask while doing it. I was like, "ok, that can't be very safe!". I'd say no way.
