constipated infant
DD will be 7 months on Monday. She is BF and eating two meals a day. She has never really had a problem going to the bathroom, however, the last few days her poops have been hard and she is struggling going. Poor baby was up half the night grunting. I have been trying to give her foods higher in fiber, and offering her water more often. Not sure what else to do... any suggestions?

Re: constipated infant
If bananas or rice are part of her diet, cut those out until she goes. Offer prunes or pears for a couple of meals, and oatmeal as cereal. My ped suggested to me once a bottle with one oz water and one oz prune juice, too, but that might take a day to work.
If you need her to have immediate relief, we did use glycerin suppositories once. Those are pretty much guaranteed to work within an hour if you use them correctly (you literally have to hold her cheeks closed for a few minutes so it doesn't fall out). You just don't want to make a habit of that because you're training her system not to go naturally, though.

Feed her a container of prunes. It always helps DD go. I also dilute a some pear nectar with water, and that helps too.

Thanks. Yeah, we are giving her more fiber than anything else right now. Hope that helps, otherwise my pediatrician suggested adding metamucil to her meals to help loosen things up.

the metamucil can make her gassy, but still consitpated and the air pocket can get stuck and become excruciating. This happened with both my kids. I would try a suppository if she still cannot go

Re: constipated infant
Brown sugar or prune juice, about 2 oz mixed with 4oz water.
Also try putting the thermometer in her butt. Good luck!

yes put the thermometer in and just wiggle it a little bit. may have to do it a few times. and glycerin suppository to get her going. container of prunes, and i would stay away from rice cereal and bananas right now. the pear juice with some water also works like a charm. but you would be suprised how well the thermometer works, because it stimulates her to go

Re: constipated infant
I called my pediatrician a few weeks ago with this question. She said I could try a few things. 1. Give my DD 2 oz of apple or pear juice with 2 oz of water, 2. Put the tip of a thermometer in her butt lol, and 3. For ME to eat more fruit and less dairy...this is tough because I'm a cheese addict, but it supposedly could constipate your LO through breastmilk.
