when can you go to district instead of EI? what age?
At what age can I go directly to the district for an eval vs going to EI first? This is for my daughter who will be 3 Oct 2nd. She will be in pre school this Sept.

Re: when can you go to district instead of EI? what age?
Process usually starts 6 mos. before they turn 3 y/o. Your EI service coordinator initiates the process but you can go ahead and go straight to your district to inquire or request for the CPSE assessment.

So next month will be 6 months before she turns 3. Iw ould like to go to the district and not EI for a particular reason. Should I call CPSE for an assessment now or wait a month?
TIA!

If you are looking for services for September, you should start the process now. What school district are you in? I have a list with the contact info for each school. This is what I had to do for our district. I do not know if it is different: that you register with the school district and then you need to register for special services. THEN they send you a packet in the mail which you fill out and return to the school district. Once they receive the completed packet with all the release forms, they have 30 school days to have the evaluation. And they then schedule the meeting.

Re: when can you go to district instead of EI? what age?
Here is a sample letter I have that you can use to send to your district.
Dear (CHAIRPERSON OF CPSE):
I would like to refer my child (INSERT YOUR CHILD'S NAME) to the Preschool Special Education Program. My child's birthdate is (INSERT YOUR CHILD'S BIRTHDATE)and, I am concerned that he/she may have some developmental problems. I understand that I will be contacted by someone from the CPSE. It is my further understanding that this person will explain the program to me and cset up an evaluation.
The best time to reach me is on (INSERT DATE AND TIME).
Sincerely,
(INSERT YOUR NAME, FULL MAILING ADDRESS, TELEPHONE NUMBER)

This was pretty much the sample letter that we were told to send. I called and they gave me the CPSE chairperson's name and asked that I write the above letter to them. In my district the CPSE chair has you come in to her office and she sits down and does the paperwork with you. She then explains the program and gives you a list of places and you tell them who you want to use for the evals off of that list. They contact the eval place and then have them call you with dates to set it up. It was very easy. I would definitely call them now if it is too early they will tell you when you can get started. I had to bring a lot of documentation with me to the CPSE person so you might want to get all of that together (i.e. birth certs, medical records, deed or rental agreement, utility bills etc to prove you live in the district).

Re: when can you go to district instead of EI? what age?
I didn't send a letter but just called their special ed dept. They sent me paperwork in the mail to fill out and then I needed to drop them off in person. Then I was asked to pick an agency for evaluation process and from there the agency had up to 30 days to perform the eval and then the meeting. I would call now to set everything up. Good luck
