Side effects of ADHD meds?
We started 20 mg of Vyvanse last week and it seems to be helping, but we have yet to talk to the teachers about it, we wanted to wait 2 weeks to see if they noticed a difference, without knowing they were being medicated.
Some days are great, they are fine when they get home and we get our homework done much better then before. Then there are the other days. They come home and are so cranky that they are upset about everything and anything, real silly stuff. Last night it was because we didn't want him wearing pajamas that were 2 sizes too small. He was pissed for an hour. Then later he was fine. I am not sure if it is a tired thing. They are complaning some days of being tired, but it is like they are being emoitional and irrational, more so then before. Another day one of them was crying because my DH popped his bubble in Mario Brothers. Huge tears, for 25 minutes over this.
Is being more emotional a side effect? Could it just be realted to fatigue and not eating as much during the day? I know they are not eating as much, but they are not as hungry and don't want to have a snack when they get home.
Also - do you notice that after the weekend if you don't give them meds that monday's are worse then any other day?

Re: Side effects of ADHD meds?
We just did a trial of Focalin. Started off fine but then became an emotional / whiny mess. Spoke with the doc several times during this trial and just yesterday we decided to stop since it wasn't doing anything good.

Mondays are the good days if we don't do medicine over the weekend. Being emotional, anxious, not eating, and not sleeping well is all a side effect of these drugs unfortunately. You have to take the good with the bad. If it gets the child through the day at school, and they can get a better quality of education than without the medicine, then I would keep on giving it.

My friends son (6) was just taken off Vyvanse after 3 weeks because some of his side effects were bad.. He was put on 20mg and he was ok for a week. Got bad the 2nd week. Outbursts, very emotional, he got violent (pushing kids, biting, severe outbursts), behavior in school was out of control. The Dr put him on 30mg. That made him tired and his appetite decreased. After a few days of that, he was taken off of it totally. I just spent 5 hours with him today and he was super active and his appetite was back. They are trying to figure out what to try next.. Not all meds are good for all kids
