7 month old house training

So my little schnauzer is a wonderful puppy. We got her when she was a little under 4 months and she became sick with pneumonia so we basically used wee wee pads to get through the cold months when we were not allowed to take her out. Fast forward to the spring. She is a happy healthy puppy and we are converting her to outside walks. I have done the wake up walk and dog parks through out the day. She is basically well walked and exercised! However, she is still spotting up the house! I am trying to teach her to hold her pee for a few hours at a time in preparation for me going back to work but it seems she still wants to pee in the house. She is not crated and I hate keeping her in it for long periods. PLUS- she has a tendancy to tear up the wee wee pads all over the place so we do not use them at all! Any recommendations?? I do not have a sealed backyard at the moment unfortunately.

Re: 7 month old house training

Years ago - I went through something similar with my Max... and I finally had to crate him to get him to hold it.

I would suggest if you don't want to crate her - at least confine her to a smaller space. In time, she will learn to hold it in time as she won't want to "live" in her pee...

Re: 7 month old house training

We have done the small area in the house and she still pees :/ how exactly do u crate? Did you leave the dog in there for hours at a time, then take out to walk or did you have specific times that you crated? She's a window dog and loves looking at her cats and squirrels. I'm so torn but I think crating is the only way to get her to hold it.

Re: 7 month old house training

We started our pups in for about 3 hours (I worked close enough to home to be able to run out and walk them)...but they were 2 or 3 months old... but at 7 months, your girl should be able to hold it for about 5 or 6... We kept the crates near our sliding glass door so they could see out, so if you have space that you can do th at, then she won't miss her outdoor time..

Honestly, if you have the time to 'wean' her into it... do it for a few hours at a time to get her used to it.

Most dogs really do get used to the crate and find it a confort... my older guy would go in when ever he wanted to sleep cause then the younger one would leave him alone!

Here are two sites that have some great info on how to crate train..

So your advice has been working!! First thing I did was get rid of the carpet she was spotting on. Then I started leaving her crate out in the living room. I began leaving her in it for two-three hours at first, then five. No accidents in the crate and she has not been spotting in the house at all when we leave her out with us. And I am being very methodical with the times I take her out to use the bathroom so she is getting used to a schedule. She actually goes into her crate very often to rest when I am in the shower or cleaning in another room. I think she finds comfort in it. Thanks again for the help!
