Worried about training puppy..how long can a 5 month old "hold it"?
I posted before that DH and I are thinking about adopting a 5 month old lab from a shelter. One (of the many) questions I have is what I would do with him while I am at work? I work from 7:30 am to about 4 pm. Do I keep him in a cage? Could he even go that long without going to the bathroom? Any advice would be SO appreciated!

Re: Worried about training puppy..how long can a 5 month old "hold it"?
Right now we have 3 dogs. We're gone from 7:45AM til about 6pm. Our youngest is a five month old pit mix and she holds it all day while we are gone. She stays in her crate. We started out by giving her just enough room to stand up, lay down and turn around. So she wont go to the bathroom in the back of the crate and lay in the front. we got her at 3 months and she's always been good about holding it.We walk her right before we leave in the morning and as soon as we get home. Now she has the full size of the crate, which is huge and she is fine. I would defiantelty reccomend crate training. Good luck!

I'm glad you're considering it now, before bringing a puppy home! Generally, it's one hour per month of age. So 5 months = 5 hours. Definitely not a full work day so you have some options. You or someone else coming in at lunch for a walk, a dog walker, doggie day care, training to go on a wee-wee pad.
We opted for midday visits and used a lot of different options to get that done, but ours was 9 months old when we got him. One of the reasons we wanted an older dog was so we didn't have to worry about puppy things.

By 5 months Bella was able to hold it from 8-4:30. But we did keep her crate turned into our laundry room with pads down incase she had to go to the bathroom, that way she could sleep in a clean crate and get out and pee if she need too, but she was good with holding it.

That is a really long time for a 5 month old puppy to not go to the bathroom. We have a 5 month old puppy, and while she is able to hold it for at least 8 hours, we've only done that once or twice, and one time was only because we got stuck in traffic. If I wasn't home during the day we wouldn't have gotten a puppy. I think the puppy could last that long in a crate without going to the bathroom, but I'm not sure it's what is best for the dog.

I feel like bigger dogs are better at holding it. If you can't have someone come in, I'd leaving something down in case he can't.

Maggie is 5 months - I'm gone from 8-4 and I opted to have a dog walker... he's very affordable if you're interested
**also think about how the dog was set up at the shelter. My friend had some trouble crate trainer her dog when he came home from the shelter at 6 months because they are forced to go to sleep, eat, and go to the bathroom in the same place...

Re: Worried about training puppy..how long can a 5 month old "hold it"?
I have a six month puppy and he's been holding it from 7:30-4 since he's 4 months old. We keep him in an exercise pen attached to a crate so he has more space. I was expecting accidents but we haven't had any since the first two days back to work. We are slowly working on letting him be free all the time since he's been doing so well. The longest we've left him free has been about 5 hours. Good luck!

He may be too young to hold it that long, IME.

i was just going to say this!!
when we had hershey as a puppy, DH brought him to work all day & he was always with someone (perks of owning your own buisness! lol)
when hershey was about 8 months old, we started leaving him home alone... HOWEVER we have an automatic doggie door for him that opens and shuts when he comes within a couple feet of it -- i REALLLLLY reccomend that! they are a little but soooo worth it! in the morning i walk him when i first get up and feed him right before i walk out of the house... so its nice that i dont have to wait for him to pee/poo before i leave b/c he has access to outside whenever he wants!
