Haircuts!

DS flips out when it comes to getting a hair cut. He cries and trying to wiggle away. He turns red and is very strong so he kicks and hits. He has very thick, course hair so growing it long isn't an option.

We have tried going at different times. We have tried letting him hold and play with (unplugged) the buzzer. We have tried DH getting a haircut and him watching.

Any ideas or suggestions???

He is 27.5 months old.

It's so hard I know. My son is 7 now and he finally just started sitting without crying. I can give you our hairdressers # she's awesome with kids and she comes to your home. If your in Suffolk send me a pm.

Re: Haircuts!

does he have to get his haircut with a buzzer?
If so, can YOU buy one and leave it at home and have him hold it at home to desensitize him??

Re: Haircuts!

DS is the worst! I actually was told to leave once at a Supercuts!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I go to a place at the mall now for kids. Lots of TV's, cartoons on the wall and they sit in cars they can play with. He still is bad, but gets distracted every once in a while for the person to quickly do what they have to do.
DS's hair grows fast too and is all over the place so we have to go often. Of course I usually procrastinate when it's starting to look messy or wait till we have something coming up (holidays, party, etc)

Re: Haircuts!

My DS was like that as well. He finally started sitting without fighting and crying around 4 years old. Now at 5 he'll sit by himself for the haircut, but he still doesn't like when she uses the buzzer.

We go to a woman who works out of her house and has kids of her own - she's really great with him, and he feels comfortable going there.

Re: Haircuts!

I go to a kids place that has videos and go to one particular stylist who buzzes him. She is fast and does a good job for him, so it is worth every penny to me.

Totally understand!

DS was so horrible I started doing it myself at home. At first I had no idea what I was doing just buzzed and I got better and better and so did he. Around 6+ months ago I decided to try the barber again. Well he sat and haircuts are not really an issue now. I know it's hard but hang in there and be persistent!

This was us too. Somewhere are 3.5/4 He started tolerating. Finally now at ~5 he sits still (doesn't completely like it, but sits still).

We use Rockabilly's in East Northport and the first 2-3 times we had 3 people holding him down/cutting his hair.

I still only get it cut every 3-4 months. Good thing he looks good with the shaggy, surfer look

I just do it myself. Saves the aggravation. I use the buzzer and do the entire thing with a #2. Probably wouldn't work if he had a different kind of cut.

Re: Haircuts!

I started desensitizing him at home. I bought a buzzer and told him it was a tickle machine (he loves tickles). I told him the tickle machine had to make noise to work properly. I told him that tickle machines particularly liked boys in capes...like super heroes that fly. (we were having issues with him putting the cape on). For three days straight we did this (with no hair cutting at all). I just let him hold the buzzer and put it on his neck. On the fourth day I told him we were going to get his hair cut and that they had a tickle machine there. He sat with no problem.

Another alternative is to get a scissor cut and not a buzz cut.
