Any recs for 1/2 marathon training?
I am starting to get my runs to 6 miles & I never thought I'd say this, but I'm finally considering doing a race.
I have never done any races, so any recs, schedules, apps, etc would be GREAT!
My schedule for working out is so hard, so I'm not sure what tine frame I have for training, that'll determine when a race can be.
TIA!!!!

Re: Any recs for 1/2 marathon training?
I was in the same boat as you. Was at about 6 miles max, so I started doing one long run every week..I picked a day (sunday for me) to do a long run. I would add one mile every week until I was up to 11. So in about 5 weeks I was ready for the half...
I did great!! That was back in november, I've since done another half and want to do a full at some point!
So my training was basically:
Monday-body pump class (weights) Tuesday-Shorter run-(3 miles or so) Wednesday-another weight class Thursday-interval run (running one minute very fast, 1.5 minutes slow) Friday-OFF Saturday-OFF Sunday-Long run day
This is what worked for me. Other people may have had different schedules recommended to them, I kind of developed my own plan and it went smoothly. I clearly remember hitting 9 miles and thinking "yup, i'm ready for 13". LOL. Good luck!!

Re: Any recs for 1/2 marathon training?
Yeah, I've started looking & I was so excited to see you don't have to do a long run EVERYTIME. I just decided yesterday to push to the 6 & it wasn't bad at all...I am a little fatigued today, but that's probably because I only typically do between 4&5 miles.
Now to find a race to shoot for. I want to do some smaller ones too, to get a feel for what to expect.

I also really like Hal Hidgon's schedules.
Here's a long island race calendar!

Re: Any recs for 1/2 marathon training?
I looked at all the training plans i could find on google and then did my own thing. Main thing was increasing the long run by 1 mile every week. I started training coming off an injury so I was only regularly running 3-4 miles. In 9 weeks I ran a sub 2 hr half marathon. Good luck! It is addicting.

i also suggest hal higdon's training programs. the first official race i ever did was a half marathon, and i used hal higdon's novice schedule for training. i've since done 5 more halfs, and STILL use his schedules.

Thank you!!! Now to find some races.....I was so pumped from my run the other day that I think this will be a GREAT incentive to keep building!!! Plus I'm down to a size 4....I've NEVER been a 4 & I want to keep it!!!!!

Re: Any recs for 1/2 marathon training?
I used the Hal Higdon for my first two half marathons. I used a modified version for my third. I'm about to start the run less run faster program for my first full. I loved the Higdon program but I'm looking to increase speed and my schedule is crazy. I'd definitely recommend the Higdon for your first.
Good luck!,
