Nook or Kindle for 7yr old DD?

My DD is turning 7 in July and is a voracious reader. We go to the library twice a month and take out 15-20 books at a time and they still only last her a couple of days. She has used my ipad before to download some books but I"m wondering it it would be a good idea to get her an e-reader for her bday this year.

I do not want anything she can play games on, strictly just for reading. Also, doesn't one of the e-readers let you borrow e-books from your local library? This would be ideal as I have a feeling she would rack up $$$ buying and reading books all day long!!! Can anyone recommend/have experience with this? Thanks!

If you just want something simple why not get the nook simple touch. It is the basic one (which is what you want if you just want the reader). Right now they are having a mother's day sale and it is $79 until 5/12.

Yes, our library has a nassau gateway or something like that and you just go to your public library's website and there should be a place to register. Then you can download (you can download books for nooks AND kindles). It is very easy. You only get the books for 2 weeks which is a pain if you want longer books - but for children's books that is probably more than enough. If it is popular you can go on a waiting list and they email you when the book is available. There are some free kids books over on barnes & noble's site and many that are very cheap as well. (you can get epub or PDF format from the library).

both amazon and nook now both allow you to take books out of the libabry

amazon give syou one free rental a month if you are a prime member

if your daughter reads at night or in the car at night - i would get the simple touch nook with built in light - it is eink so can see in the sunlight but also has the night for dark. otherwise you have to buy an extra light to read in dark. R-ink is better for your eyes then then screens and can be seen in glaring sunlight

nook allows you to charge an account with gift cards. also so you can set it so you need a password to purchase

in my house my mom and i share one account because we read similar books so we both have acccess to them

live-bary.com is the site for suffolk county to download books - i would check if there are authors she likes

I know I will probably be the minority voice, but I am a second grade teacher and I firmly believe a 7 year old should be reading book and not electronically. The most important reason for this is that it is much easier to look back in a story in a hard copy book, and a young reader should be doing that often in analyzing the plot and characters, and since you said she's a good reader, shes probably reading books with multiple plots and may need to back track to keep up on them.

ITA...I think a 7 yr old should be reading real books, but IDK why I think this. Chat Icon

Part of it for me is taking DS to the library, looking up subjects he likes, picking the books out. It just has a feeling to it, I would hate to lose.

Could you trust her not to accidently be buying books too? It is fairly easy to buy them.

ETA-YAY for her love of reading!

Yes, I can see your point about "real" books. I would definitely agree for my DS that would be true. But IDK, my DD learned to read when she was 2.5 (self taught) and literally tears through books and her comprehension is at a 5th grade level according to CO testing. So that's why I think she might be ready for it. I am anti ipad/Wii etc until they are older but I think for sheer convenience and because she will read the same books over and over again when she runs out of options, that this may be the way to go.

But good food for thought and I think I will ask her reading teacher what she thinks about it. Thanks! Appreciate the professional opinion Chat Icon

I don't see anything wrong with getting a kindle or nook. I'm not sure if this is a concern but I understand there is no parental controls for the ones with browsers.

My daughter's teacher suggested it for her because the word look-up is right on the page & it's great to expand vocabulary for kids that are reading more complicated books. We haven't gotten it yet but I'm thinking about it for her birthday.

It's actually easy to look back on a kindle. You can do a search for a keyword.

On the other hand, I think having your kids use local resources like the library is an invaluable experience so I'd probably continue with the library also.

edited to add:
I went Kindle. My theory is Amazon will be around a lot longer than a company that is the largest retailers of books.

My 11 year old has the kindle touch and my 9 year old the nook color. They both still read hard copy books as well. I like the nook better for the little ones

Re: Nook or Kindle for 7yr old DD?

while my first thought is that of really a 7yo should be reading actual books, I think we need to realize that kids today are growing up in a more technology based society and this is the "norm"

Anyway, 2 of my nieces have a nook (11 and 9) and love it! I know in our area you can go to live-brary.com and rent books from the "library". And as a benefit if people dont know what to get her as gifts, a barnes and noble gift card for ebooks is a good option too!
