do you have to fast with the glucose test? Update

I wasnt given any instructions on what to do.

I was told not to eat any carbs or sugars that day/morning before the test and nothing for at least 2 hours before it. Definitely not to eat or drink ANYTHING once you start and drink the stuff.

I ended up not having breakfast that morning and just eating after the test.

1 hr - no, just couldnt eat or drink anything after i drank the glucose drink

3 hr - yes...i starved for 16 hours (couldnt eat anythng after midnight)

I was JUST about to post this question!

I was told to eat nothing for 12 hours before. So if I stop eating at 7pm I can go for the test at 7am (before work).

But I usually eat dinner like 730-8pm I am sad I will go to bed hungry.

I didnt eat anything in the morning, I had a 7am appt and after the blood tests I was able to eat my breakfast

i took the 2hour test and was told to have my last meal the night before at 10pm

my test was at 9am

I didn't have to fast ~ my dr gave me a list of foods I could eat ~ I chose two eggs and a piece of toast. I ate an hr or hr 1/2 before nothing during ~ I passed.

They told me it was ok, just not to eat an abnormally large breakfast.

i just called my OB this morning and they told me i can eat, just not anything too big and not too sugary! I am going to eat one waffle at 730 and take the test at 845

I had mine done at Sunrise Medical Labs and they told me not to eat anything the morning of the test. They told me to come in as early as I can so I didn't have to fast all day.

with my dd I did NOT fast. I passed
with my ds I DID fast. I passed

For the 3 hour, yes. Some labs won't even do the test on you unless you have fasted for at least 12 hours (a little ridiculous, but that's what they require).

For the 1 hour I only had to fast for an hour before the glucose drink.

the one hour was supposed to be all protein nothing else.. but i could eat.. i took it at 4pm..
the 3 hour was only water by mouth, ,and nothing once i drank.. i ate my last meal/food at 9pm teh night before..

I was told to fast before both. They didn't give me any instructions the second time I had to call and ask

It depends on the doctor and lab. With my first pregnancy, the lab wouldn't administer the test to the person in front of me because she ate breakfast. This time, when I called the lab (different one), I was told to ask my doctor. I fasted, but was able to drink water up until the test.

My dr told me I could have protein the morning of the test but no sugar the day before. When I got to quest she said its best to fast for 8-10 hours. HTH

HOW COULD EVERY DR. BE SOOO DIFFERENT!! Dont you have to get the same results???

This question frustrates me b/c I was told to eat NORMAL and just not ear or drink AFTER the test..

so why do some drs. want you to fast?? Or doen't eat carbs.... I just dont get it!!

my doc told me that i had to eat something before i went, and not to fast.... but just don't have anything sugary. I ended up having a bowl of oatmeal and passed.

I didnt fast the 1st time and was told the same thing this time. My test is early in the morning and the N?P suggested I eat something with protein like wheat toast with peanut butter or a hard boiled egg. But she suggested not to eat a bowl of super sugary cereal.

I always wondered why some dr say to fast or not to fast. I guess my thoughts are if you have GD, then you have it and fasting or not fasting isnt going to change the answer.
