What can we do regarding CONSTANT barking?
We rescued a dachshund months ago. SHe was a very good dog in the beginning but honestly now she's out of control She barks allllll day long. Literally. We brought her to the vet, nothing wrong. She barks when my kids run too fast, she barks if we leave the room, she barks as we eat meals. We put her outside, she barks. We've only lived here a couple months and people already complained. She wakes my kids up every single day with continuous barking.
What can (if anything) we do to stop this? If it continues I'm afraid we would have to find another home for her. I don't want to cause I found her, nursed her back to health and she's such a smart dog. But the barking is effecting our home life. We can't even have normal conversations cause we have to scream over her to hear each other. She's not sick (according to the vet) ,not hungry, not neglected in anyway. At least not at my home, idk what it was like for her before we found her.
Do bark collars work? My DH thinks we should get one but is it like abuse to them? I know nothing about them
Thanks

Re: What can we do regarding CONSTANT barking?
Some dogs are very vocal or nervous. Honestly I strongly believe a bark collar is very cruel.
To me it sounds like maybe she needs some exercise. That is often the reason dogs are anxious with pent up energy and bark. I know b/c I have a barker too...

Re: What can we do regarding CONSTANT barking?
OMG my doxie doesn't bark at all!! thats so weird!! My shih tzu barks her head off though. I put change in a water bottle and every time she barks I shake it. Now if I hold it up she stops!! try that, it really works

Re: What can we do regarding CONSTANT barking?
my doxie barks a lot. it has calmed down some. we lived in an apartment and had a few complaints. so now we live with family and he rarely stays home. he is very sad and cries and barks when we leave, so i take him as many places as possible.

Re: What can we do regarding CONSTANT barking?
We had to give my puggle Xanax. The vet said the barking (paired with other behaviors) was a sign of anxiety.

Re: What can we do regarding CONSTANT barking?
Would it be possible to have a trainer come in to help?
Sorry if that's a dumb answer---I'm not sure if that's something trainers can do
I'm not a fan of bark collars or any sort of shocking device.

Re: What can we do regarding CONSTANT barking?
We have a min pin and they are big barkers. We have a spray collar for him. It has a remote control. When he barks, I press the button and it beeps. Warning him to stop. if he doesn't, I spray him. It's just compressed air. It sprays him on his jaw. Doesn't hurt, but he doesn't like it.
We don't use it all the time, just when he forgets he shouldn't be barking at nothing.
When we put it on him, we don't even need to spray it, the beep is enough of a warning. Mostly, he knows once the collar is on, there is no barking.
It helps us.

Re: What can we do regarding CONSTANT barking?
We have the Multivet Anti-Bark Spray Collar.
I looked it up online and don't see this exact one, but they have newer models and also saw other companies have them too.
The one we got wasn't citronella - it was just plain old air.
Just google anti-bark spray collar. I also saw vibrating ones too.

Re: What can we do regarding CONSTANT barking?
I have a dachshund who is a barker. We worked with a trainer for a long time as he is a rescue and he had quite a few issues. I'm not sure how much the trainer helped with the barking but it helped for us to understand why he barks and now we can predict when he will bark. In our situation, our dog always wants to be top dog, so he barks to show he is boss. He barks upon going out in the yard or as soon as we get outside with him on leash. He has to tell all the dogs, cats and squirrels of the neighborhood that he is present. He actually does stop after he makes his presence known but will start up again if he sees another animal. He actually gets along great with other dogs but 9 times out of 10 it is because other dogs, even huge dogs, let him dominate. He also barks at the mailman and UPS guy. He does not generally bark when it is just our family in the house but he did in the past. I had a dog like that when I was a teenager and that was very difficult., That dog was more skittish and I think it was more about nervousness. My dog does not really have fear. I think that knowing the reasons will help. The trainer taught us to ignore him when he barks. If we are about to feed him and he barks as if to demand food, our best way to show that he cannot push us around is to give him nothing until he is quiet. On some nights we are not great with it but when we were more consistent he was good for quite a while. Giving hin the food immediately only taught him to bark so he can be fed in a hurry.
The best part about these dogs is that when they are not misbehaving, almost all of them are affectionate and entertaining. This is my second dachshund. The first one died many years ago & was not as dominant but had some similar traits to my Oscar.
