My poor baby Darwin!

I feel like a terrible pet parent so I have to confess my sins... also feel free to laugh at me when you're done reading.

So yesterday Darwin started licking the pad on his front paw and since the next time either DH or I can bring him to the vet to get it looked at will be Thursday, to prevent it from getting bad I decided to wrap it in gauze. It looked really cute and he could walk on it just find so I figured it was a good solution. Yay me, right?!

Fast forward to 1:47am, I wake up hearing Darwin gagging, I jump out of bed and see the gauze is gone. I look all over the room and then instantly panic thinking he ate his makeshift bandage. I dig out the instructions the vet gave me on how to make him vomit (Darwin has a history finding and trying to swallow trouser socks) and proceed to bust out the hydrogen peroxide and turkey baster (because of his history I have a turkey baster just for this purpose, it is still safe to eat Thanksgiving dinner at my house) and capture Darwin in the corner tub in the master-bath because I know the sides are too high for him to escape from. So there I am attacking my dog in the tub force feeding him hydrogen peroxide to make him vomit at 2am. The vet said it could take up to 20 minutes and if it doesn't work the first time I can do it up to three times. Needless to say it doesn't work the first or second time but third time's the charm and Darwin barfs up his dinner and whatever else finds its way into a dog's stomach throughout the course of a day. (Please keep in mind DH is sleeping less than 10 feet away throughout this entire ordeal) It's now after 3am and there I am with a freakin Q-tip trying to see if the gauze made its way out and of course IT’S NOT THERE. I panic all over again thinking now that maybe Huxley got it. However I manage to keep my calm for more than 30 seconds and decide that I will search the room a second time and realize at that moment that I never looked under the bed… I get down on the ground and there is the little bandage right in plain sight. I grab it, look up and there is Darwin staring at me like “what an IDIOT.” I felt AWFUL!!! I promised him a grilled chicken dinner tonight because I was convinced he had to hate me but two minutes later he climbed into bed right next to me and went right to sleep… which pretty much made me feel worse. Needless to say I did not reapply the bandage and stuck a little winter boot I had bought on him because he can’t get that off.

And now I know it’s a good thing I did not go into the medical profession as I am down right awful in an emergency situation.

Chat Icon Too funny. Good luck at the vet, or is the paw better now that he made you lose your mind?

My poor baby Darwin!

Of course the paw is fine now... He must have stepped on something on his walk that night and it was just irritated but he's left it alone ever since... unless he's just afraid I'm going to come at him with the turkey baster again.

Re: My poor baby Darwin!

To me, the funniest part of this is whenever our old furbaby Chewie would wake up sick (happened a ton at the end) it was ME who slept right through and DH who heard EVERY sound and was up with him. So...if it makes you feel any better, not only was I a terrible pet mama, I may just not be cut out to be a real mama someday, too!
