EBF and starting solids
Can those who have recently done this remind me of how you started to incorporate solids into their diets-- which foods, how often, etc?
I have been giving Jonah a bit of cereal in a pumped bottle since 4 months per his doc, so a couple of weeks ago, I tried giving him some in a bowl to see how he'd do since he was showing interest in food. I just tried a little sweet potato too which he has taken to as well.
Anyway-- he'll be 6 months on Monday, and his doc is on vacation, so I still have another 2 weeks to wait before his appt-- and I don't want to wait to start doing more food since I think it's helping with sleep, etc.
Thx!

EBF and starting solids
when we started solids with DS we gave him 1-2 tbsp of oatmeal/cereal once a day for a week, then 2x a day for another week. once he was ok with that we started trying orange and yellow fruits and veggies once a day as well until we saw he had no reactions and liked each one. once he had tried everything, all colors of fruits and veggies, we gave him oatmeal and a fruit in the morning and then oatmeal and a veggie for dinner.
we have tried to increase the amount and change the consistency every few days to see what he could tolerate.

Re: EBF and starting solids
DS did not like rice cereal or oatmeal.
He liked pureed veggies and fruit.
One day we gave him a little chicken soup and he ate 2 bowls! He LOVED it.

Re: EBF and starting solids
DD is 5 &1/2 months and we just started on cereal this past weekend. I give her about 2 tbsp of cereal once a day. She loves it! In another week, I will give it to her twice a day. Then we will start with veggies. Figure about a half a stage 1 with "dinner" and move on from there. I don't think you can really mess it up. Just go by your baby's queues. I started 3yr old DD at 4 months on cereal, this time I waited until the baby was showing signs of wanting to eat. So I figure since she is a little older, we will progress with food a little faster.

Re: EBF and starting solids
we never did cereal....don't see any nutrional benefit versus an actual whole food.
started with avocado, pureed apples, pears ect.
DS is 7 months today and eats pretty much everything except for meats...he's not interested yet.

Re: EBF and starting solids
We skipped baby foods and slowly started table foods at 7 months. We follow baby led weaning since baby foods are pointless unless your baby has a problem with textures.

Re: EBF and starting solids
i really took my time b/c with dc #2, i was more busy and foggy about the whole starting solids routine again.
i skipped the rice and did baby oatmeal b.c i remember that it can cause constipation. i started by doing solids 1x a day. after i would nurse in the morning, i would give him a small bowl of baby oatmeal. after about 2 weeks or so, i started putting a little applesauce in the oatmeal. then, when i had the time, i started purreeing some foods over a weekend. i think i started with sweetpotato, then butternut squash. i did the veggies as a lunch so he moved on to eating solids 2x a day ( in addition to bottles)
eventually, i just started grinding up whatever we were eating for dinner which then turned into his dinner for that night. he wasnt on purees for very long. if i remember correctly, we started solids around 6 months and i wasnt in any rush to try new foods every 3 days. he would sometimes have butternut squash for lunch every day for like 2 weeks at a time simply b.c i did not get a chance to puree something else.
by 8.5 months he was eating finger foods. i was putting pieces of bananas , broccoli florets ( real small ones) with shredded cheddar. he took to finger foods great! he was off of purees by 9 months.
its crazy how much you forget when you have your 2nd baby. i remember feeling like introducing solids was such a daunting task. i work full time and get home by 7:15 so, incorporating solids was a little tricky but it went smoothly b.c i tried not to stress over giving him variety everyday. now he eats everything under the sun and LOVES it! good luck!

EBF and starting solids
We started with some baby oatmeal and he liked it. I then did banana mashed up and have just gone from there. He would love BLW, but it scares the crap out of me so we use the mesh teether a lot. It's been wonderful putting fresh fruit in it for him. He really enjoys it a lot!
