I was because I am on a medicine that counteracts folic acid. The dose is 1 mg and no side effects.

I am because of previous history of NTD. I take an extra 4 mg per day with no side effects. Basically as I was told, you can't OD on folic acid and with my history that's the recommended dosage.

I was from the beginning. They changed it to a pre broken down folic (Metnax) but I'm still on both. Plus I take prescription iron pill that has another dose and I'm totally fine on all of it. It's water soluable so your body takes what it needs.

Re: Has anyone been put on extra folic acid in addition to prenatals?
yes, i had to take extra in the beginning because i was carrying twins. I lost one of the twins at 9 weeks but the doctor still has me on 1mg a day. I've been taking it everyday since the beginning wth my prenatals and i'm 36 weeks.

Re: Has anyone been put on extra folic acid in addition to prenatals?
Tahnk you all for your responses. I just got my BFP last week. I was on prenatals that have 1mg. But the specialist had me taking an addition 800 mcg bc I am heterozygous for factor 5 and MTHFR. BUt my iron pill (i'm anemic) also has 400 mcg of folic acid. Yesterday I had the worst cramps ever and diarhhea last night and this morning. I read that too much folic acid could cause cramping and diarhhea, but Im concerned it could hurt the baby. My doc isnt in until monday and I am waiting for a call back from the NP.

It may be from the folic acid, but it can also be from just being pregnant. Congrats!!!

The same for me. To be honest I have no idea why my dr gave it to me, I just took it.

I also take an extra iron pill b/c I 'm slightly anemic in addition to the Folgard and haven't had issues. Like pp said, it may just be the pregnancy messing with your stomach. Make sure you're drinking a ton of water to keep hydrated. Cramps can also be a sign of dehydration.

Sounds like the cramping and diarhea are just from being PG. I was like that in the very beginning.

Re: Has anyone been put on extra folic acid in addition to prenatals?
I was told to take an extra pill of folic acid aside from my prenatals by my ob/gyn, when i was having trouble conceiving. Once i got preg, i asked my dr if i should stop or continue and she said continuing is great.
