Switching therapists

Has anyone ever switched therapists? Was it awkward? Did you have to see the original one again before the new one started?

DH and I are thinking about requesting a different speech therapist for DS. The one we have now has been working with him for almost 3 months and we weren't crazy about her from the start. Just her overall demeanor, certain comments she has made, showing frustration, etc. We feel that DS could benefit from somebody new. He's almost 23 months and still is not talking at all. He only says "Mom". I'm not saying I think a new therapist would magically get him talking, I just think it's time to try finding somebody we like better.

So my issue is I'm nervous that our current therapist will find out we want to switch and confront me! I really don't know what I would say... "sorry, but we don't like you"?? This is so awkward!!

Anybody have a similar situation?

Re: Switching therapists

I had to switch speech therapists a while ago as well and had the same concerns. I did have an "out" though. We had her coming on Saturdays which was not working out for us. So I used that as an excuse. That being said, I did still get what I perceived to be an "attitude." However, you can just call up the agency and tell them that you have not seen much progress and they will switch her out.

Re: Switching therapists

We had to switch therapists because DS hated her. He threw tantrums all the time she was there. We video taped a session with all the therapists and we're mortified how she was treating him when I was in the other room knowing she was being taped. We called the agency to have her replaced. It was not awkward because we did not have to tell her in person or see her again. We wound up getting another therapist who was amazing, so if your gut is telling you to switch, then switch. It can't be worse than you have now.

Re: Switching therapists

I would tell the agency that after 3 months of sessions you're not seeing any connection between your child and the therapist and you would like another therapist.

I remember my dc starting out with a therapist I thought was too tough, sometimes didn't come in with a smile...but she always came in on time, bought LOTS of bags filled with toys (never the same old stuff), never told me she needed 1/2 hour to fill out paperwork - she would never cut into therapy time to do paperwork. She was playful but tough. Turns out she is the best therapist he has and she gets the most out of him.
