Cats Who Refuse to Poop in the Box
Does anyone have any suggestion to help this problem?
My 8 year old baby girl is a PITA when it comes to pooping in the box.
She's always been picky with the box conditions and it seems her OCD just kept getting worse and worse.
It started with her not pooping in the box if there was more than 2 other poops in there. Then with no more than 1 poop. Then no poop or pee. Now it doesn't matter. I pretty much check the box and scoop it several times a day and she still poops right next to it, like she's mocking me. She sits and watches me clean the box too, lol, so she knows it's clean.
She's so lucky she's adorable and loves me so much, lol. She's my buddy and folllows me all over the house, so I know she's not mad at me.
Anyone else have this problem or ideas on how to fix this?
TIA!

Let me know if you find a solution bc mine will go in the box but then poop out the front and it's a big box. I've tried cleaning and spraying outside the box but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

1. change the type of litterbox 2. change the litter 3. put the box in a different location 4. add another litterbox

What about a top entry litter box?

Re: Cats Who Refuse to Poop in the Box
Ugh - this was a big problem when I had my 2 cats. I had this issue a couple of times when we lived in our apartment. This is what the vet recommended that worked for us:
-Try moving the box - to a different location
-cleaning it 2 times a day if possible
-try getting a new box
-if you have the ones with the cover try one without a cover, if you have one without - try getting one with a cover
-try different litter - or putting some baking soda into the litter.
-Put more than one box out - my vet suggested putting one on each floor or in 2 different spots - this way they have a more clean one if you can't get there to clean it 2x a day (for example if you work longer hours).
We had for a short time one of those electric ones that self cleans itself. IF you cat isn't scared of it - it worked well - but it one time went off while my cat was still in it and she refused to go back in it every again.
I hate to mention this - but this happened to my cats when they ended up starting to be diabetic and had a urinary tract infection. Have you checked to make sure that there isn't something wrong?

Re: Cats Who Refuse to Poop in the Box
I had this problem with Lenny except it wasn't poop that was the problem. He would pee on things if the little box wasn't to his liking. I have found what works is, scooping his litter twice a day. Once in the morning and once at night. I also got him a more open litter box, still with a lid but with a bigger opening, I don't think he liked feeling confined, and I also changed the type of litter I was using to the purple scoop away (costco sells a 40lb bag for like 14 bucks) one that clumps alot better and is easier to clean and completely absorbs any smell in there. I don't know if any of these things will help but it's worth a try

Re: Cats Who Refuse to Poop in the Box
My parents cats do this whenever there is ANYTHING in the litter box. So they have to clean it as soon as one cat goes.

Re: Cats Who Refuse to Poop in the Box
Thanks for the suggestions!
Unfortunately I've tried changing the type of litter several times and I scoop it more than twice a day as is.
I can't change the location of the box or get a second box b/c where it is now (and where we are putting it at the new house when we move this weekend) are the only spots in the apartment/house where it can go. Otherwise it will be in a public area and I don't want it in my kitchen or livingroom, lol.
I think she's a bit too large for the top entry, she may not get back out
I'm actually hoping that the move will cause her to feel too unfamiliar to do it outside the box, lol.
If she does it again once we move the only thing left to try is getting a new box and see if she likes it better.
Thanks everyone!!!
