Thought this was interesting.

Students will now be required to take 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetable for their meal to be considered a full meal. If no
fruit or vegetable is selected, the student will pay the individual item prices (a la carte) for foods instead of
the complete meal price.

Everything being dictated to parents is so out of control. I actually think this is really absurd. I just saw the news today about formula being locked up at hospitals. As if parents dont have any idea of what to give their children these days.

Ridiculous. My older ds does not eat fruit and only likes veggies cooked a certain way.

That seems silly. So the ala carte price is higher? My child won't touch a vegetable and vitamin C interferes with his meds, so no fruit during school. I'll have to send a note in for his aide when he buys lunch to make sure he gets something to make it a complete lunch.

I don't know.
I look over school menu...
hotdogs.
are they quailty dogs? or high in sodium and nitrates?
hamburgers...what kind of meat are we talking about?
lasnagna...how much sodium can this processed meal have in it?

i think it is time they produce nutrition labels.
if a "fruit" is a hfcs fruit cup...then please, let it pass my kid by.

if the veggie is greenbeans from a can with salt added, again, we don't need it.

the whole system needs an overhaul.
like everything else.

Is this a joke??

Seriously, as someone who works in prevention and health promotion it sounds so unrealistic and idiotic. What about all the kids who qualify for free/reduced lunch?

One of the hospitals I work with did choose to increase the price points on burgers and fries compared to the healthy entrees but for adults that's more reasonable.

Yes but don't schools use canned veggies with tons and tons of sodium or canned fruit with tons and tons of sugar. In the same breath is it being processed and cleaned for pesticides? I'd rather my kid have no veggie or fruit than ones full of sodium, sugar and pesticides

I 100% agree with this!

A lot of the school lunch meals are things I do prepare in my own home --- such as sloppy joes, tacos, etc.

But I use lean ground beef or ground turkey, fresh veggies, and very minimal salt. I've actually made recipes for thigns like taco seasoning and such so that it can be salt-free.

I have a feeling that so much of what they offer is processed, and that could use some major overhauling!

Not to mention that they sell chips and junky snacks that kids can buy in addition to the meals. I've been in the lunchroom. I've watched kids drink the chocolate milk and eat their bag of chips, and then throw their "meal" in the garbage!

It isn't a perfect system!
