Food allergy moms who have done blood tests
I was hoping someone can shed a little light before I speak with my doc...
DD has tree nut allergy, and we just did blood test for the first time-- we have done skin testing on three separate occasions.
The blood tests came back with her being allergic to omly two nuts-- and the letter states "mild allergy". And I actually called and the receptionist over the phone gave me a number of 0.40 for walnuts for example-- I need to schedule an appt to get full results with the doc.
I missed the call back from the doc at 5 30 yesterday, and I of course want a little more insight before Monday!!
Is 0.40 a really low number? Any idea on if this is low enough for her to be an allergy that she will grow out of??

Re: Food allergy moms who have done blood tests
Our allergist stresses not focusing on the number since it doesn't paint the whole picture. My ds tests as mild to peanut in blood tests, but in skin tests he has an immediate strong reaction, so we can't even entertain the thought of a challenge.
As far as outgrowing the allergy, everything I've read says it's pretty rare to outgrow peanut/tree nut allergies. I think it's less than 10% of kids that do. Fingers crossed your dd is one of the lucky ones!

Re: Food allergy moms who have done blood tests
thanks-- her latest skin test came back with only 3 nuts-- walnut, pistachio and cashew. But the blood had only walnut and pistachio.
We are going to do peanut and almond food challenges in the office, but she has been negative on both of those in all the tests.
She's only 3 so I hope that the allergy is trending to something she'll grow out of. I know tree nut is one of the lowest probabilities, but I am hoping!!!

Re: Food allergy moms who have done blood tests
I think they can't predict how someone will react so if there is any positivity they err on the side of caution. Ds has severe Food allergies and for the blood testing shows some positive numbers to almost everything he is tested fo r and the numbers don't always correlate or agree with the skin testing. . He also has eczema which causes the ige to be elevated as a whole which can mask some of the numbers. To give you an example- his milk is 17 and he can't even touch it he swells up his barley is 21 and he had 5 cookies the other day. Most of his nuts are off the scale. Soy is 1.7 and garlic is 7 and he is fine with that. He skin tested positive for pork but eats that just fine. It also depends on the dose I would imagine the amount of allergic protein in a nut is different than a tablespoon of barely. I hope this helps

thanks that helps I think- at least to put it in perspective a little. And the nut protein is totally different, so the numbers will certainly mean something-- but a number less than one, has got to be at least a low result for my daughter.
Sounds like your little guy has a ton of allergies to deal with..
