apple/pumpkin picking out east
DS is 16 months and we want to go for our first family apple/pumpkin picking trip next Sunday. Any suggestions? We are in Commack so anything out east is fine, we would prefer that to going into Nassau. Also, is the 30th going to be to late for apples and to early for pumpkins? We are busy almost every weekend in October so next Sunday is really the only day we could figure out to go.

Hanks Pumpkintown. We went with our 17 month old from Commack last week. It was great!! The apple trees were small enough that she could pick her own.

Re: apple/pumpkin picking out east
Last year we tried Windy Acres in Calverton for the first time. It was so great that we went back a second time before the Fall season ended. I liked that you don't have to pay admission for the playground. You can also bring lunch and eat at the picnic tables. If you want to do the pony rides, hay ride, etc. you pay for them separately. It was really great! That being said, I think we are going back to our old favorite place for apples this year -- the Milk Pail in Watermill. We will be going back to Windy Acres for pumpkins, for sure!

Re: apple/pumpkin picking out east
Definitely not late for apples. DH and I have been going apple picking for about 5 years now and every year we go around the middle of october and the apples are still good!

Re: apple/pumpkin picking out east
We usually go to milk pail in water mill mid oct so not too late at all. Then we go to southampton town to walk around and have lunch then hit up Tates bakery on the way home.

Re: apple/pumpkin picking out east
We went to Hanks Pumpkintown today and it was excellent. We just apple picked, but they had tons of pumpkins and lots for kids to do! We usually pumpkin pick at Finks or Stakeys.

no advice but apples are going very early this year due to the mild winter and hot summer so while i usually go mid-october too that might be late for some of the long island farms (might be better upstate)

I went to Lewins on Monday..it was beyond packed! I guess since schools were closed...they had some left, but you really had to walk far into the grounds to get them..and they were totally out of Granny Smiths...

Re: apple/pumpkin picking out east
Went to Lewins today. It was definitely crowded but still plenty of apples. You need to walk far in but DS and DD had a blast being able to pick the apples. Granny Smith are towards the back right and you need to really look into the trees to find them.

Re: apple/pumpkin picking out east
We went to Lewin today and it was great. We got there around 1010, walked all the way to the back and found plenty of good looking apples. When we left around 11 it was getting packed, so I would recommend that anyone go early.
