Off Topic, but lets talk Electrician.. they make so much money. I went to school for 7 years and my DH knocks me out if he has a good year. Granted he can have a horrible year with lay offs but still, I was layed off too.
All my corporate buddies used to be shocked when he told them his salary. It was surprising how many comments I got because I was married to an "Electricia".
DH always says he should leave his job as a teacher to become an electrician or contractor! He works in a mainly blue collar district where many of the dads make more than he does.
I think the difference is everyone has gone through school and so they think they know what teachers do and could do it themselves (even if they'd prefer not too!). Most people know they have no idea how to do electrical work.

I think it's because teachers are notorious for complaining about their salaries. So other people say, okay, let's see what they are complaining about and they compare.

So funny you mention that about your DH because my BIL was a teacher and actually left to be a dispatcher for moving company because of salary. He is now the Operations manager.
Such a shame because I fee this is how we lose such great educators, he was a good teacher. I feel like to be a teacher you have to really love your job and want to motivate students to stay for lousy pay.

FTR, I feel electric workers should make a good salary. It's an important job that means more than just providing light - it's a great responsibility of safety.

Just to clarify, ofcoruse I totallly agree! My husband works his butt off and deserves every penny. But when I first met him I was surprised at his salary and so are alot of other people.
One day my niece was learning about community helpers and she got up in class talked about her uncle and how wonderful he was because with out him we would live in the dark.
When I asked her what about me because I teach, she said oh yea you too but "tio" is more important because we cant live in the dark.

Really? Because I am one of the only people out of my entire circle of family/friends who is NOT a teacher......and I hear this all the time!
My SIL's favorite (and apparently Newdsay's as well) is why the Superintendent makes $350k when the average teacher (in her district) makes $80k ......Um, isn't it the norm that your boss, and their, boss, and THEIR boss make considerably more than you?

well i guess... for me I'm just JEALOUS!
But its not limited to teachers.. I'm jealous of IT folks too. I also wish I was younger. They have jobs here for $25/hr to just sit in a cubby and write down the license plates numbers of cars that come and go. But that's Eagle Ford Shale business.

What kind of teacher is your SIL? I think 80K is good salary. I thought teachers make a lot less. I guess its dependent on educational background, where you teach etc. I thought teachers were avg 50K.

I thought average was around 80k. It's drastically lower in other parts of the country though. I think NC it's about $35-40k. But, you also have to factor in that they are off Summer's and school holidays. And YES I'm aware they take stuff home, stay after, etc.

I think because they get so much more time off than the average full time worker.
I also agree that I DO hear teachers talking about their degrees and extra classes to make their salaries and how they are doing their own homework or grading something on their days off.
Can't a teacher get a job right out of college? Which would mean they would be 21/22 years old. On LI the starting salary is $55,000/year and people in their early 40's (IME) are making close to if not over $100,000.

HAHA yup! this is why DH is already teaching DS ( not even 2 years old yet!!) how to use tools and do "handy" work Blue collar jobs can pay very well... and there are not as many people going into them now because everybody thinks a 4 year college degree is mandatory, and not many people want to do "hard" work. so i think these jobs will end up being even more in demand. we would be more than happy if DS goes into a trade like this even though DH and i both have masters degrees and "white collar" jobs.... our families are very blue collar. My parents owned a garden center- they made 6 figures a year selling plants!! they own a vacation house on the Outer Banks, and they retired at the age of 58. its all about just working hard doing what you like!

Yep, regardless of what grade you teach... a district will pay all their teachers from pre-K through HS the same salary based on years of experience and education. It often takes 15-20 years to get to $100k +, but based on the amount of education and training one needs, I think it's more than fair.
It's nice to see this thread has been supportive of teachers.

Kudos to them. Being a teacher is something I could never do. I always think, if they have personal issues they can't just sit at their desk and hide their emotions quietly. They have to always be "on" and upbeat and encouraging, even during personal issues and tragedies.

Amen. My children's teachers deserve every dollar they make. I could never in a million years deal with a room full of children all day, never mind the PARENTS!

I was surprised to find what pre-k teachers make. The ones I know have class time a total of 5 hours and have an assistant and make just about 100k.
I'm not saying I don't agree, just that I always assumed that they made less.
I don't know how many pre-K teachers you know, but I can assure you they don't all make that.
You're right. Most dont. Nothing even close to that. As a public school teacher Im not sure Ill ever get there either and I have a masters and 10 years. (Oh and still 40,000 in loans lol)

LOL So true. I had teachers in college who often brought this up. Sometimes you have to be an actor. When things are bad at home it should still be rainbows and butterflys LOL I love that I can act silly and all the kids love it. I had one of the best experiences the other day. I had to move mats in the gym. Normally I move them and tell them the rules at the same time. I totally forgot. I told them the rules and then had to move the mats. I didnt want them to sit there quietly, thats boring so I asked them to sing me what they just learned last in music. I danced around with the mats as they all sang. So sweet, they sounded like angels. They thought I was HYSTERICAL and I had tears in my eyes. Just moved, getting divorced from a man I love, going through custody etc, basically broke and yep, just got my period. Rainbows and butterflys. For a couple minutes I forgot all about what Im going through.

I agree with this. If anything I think we just try to defend ourselves b/c were often attacked. I love my job and trust me, I don't do it for the money. :)

My SIL is a teacher on LI and she was making $140000 (masters plus-has around 15 years on) so I assume this is not the norm.

Nope.. all i have is a high school diploma
Could this be the reason? I mean why would you be paid the same as a teacher with degrees?
Because I'm old enough that with my experience in my field a degree is unnecessary. I've done my time. I was actually complimenting the teachers and their choices. I'm not going to get into a tit-for-tat over those with degrees 'deserve' to make more than those of us who couldn't afford to go to college yet somehow made our lives successful.
I have actually gone back to college (for myself) with clear understanding that the company worked for then and now will NOT readjust salary based on a degree. Also when interviewing for a new job, a degree would be nice but I am chosen OVER those with degrees because of my experience and knowledge in the industry.
The answer above was to answer why don't I become an arts and crafts teacher. The answer was I have only a High School diploma. She asked if I had a BA. If I had a BA in something would I choose to go back and become a teacher? Prehaps. It seems intriguing and I love working with kids.
Again don't take any of MY comments on teachers as "they don't deserve to make more than me" because I never said that.
I'm proud of my High School Diploma I'm proud of the success I have I don't NEED a degree Yes, I want one and I'm working on it But not having a degree does not make me less of a person Less of a valuable employee Less of a worthy employee Less burdened by debt Less deserving of a valid salary to the work I do Less capable of any task given to me Less in any way shape or form to those around me with a degree.
(you could say that is as sensitive as subject to me as it is to imply teachers got it 'easy' and are over paid)

Are you a preschool teacher? Just curious..
I feel that pre-k teachers do not get paid nearly enough and they must have the patience of a saint. Both my husband and I work in education and while we get paid well, we are still just in the middle class, no richy rich for us...but perhaps that is because we live on LI where everything is sooooooo expensive!!
