Just wow.. Kudos to Teachers but wow

I was a teacher for 15 years. I changed careers and now have a freelance writing business. I have to be very disciplined about how I spend my time, search high and low for clients and always be improving my skills. It's hard.

However, it's WAY easier than teaching. I have a feeling I'll eventually make more money writing than I did teaching (I taught in the city) but teaching was probably the hardest job I'll ever have. Especially now, with common core and new evaluations. Teachers have more than ever on their plates.

Just wow.. Kudos to Teachers but wow

Thanks for the support LIF! I have more than 230 students right now in my classes. Sometimes it seems like no one is even willing to try to understanding why teaching is a difficult job. I appreciate your empathy. I just tell people - the next time you take care of 230 kids in one day you tell me how much you would like to be paid for that job! Haha.

Why does everyone compare their salaries to teachers? Why not other professions? Just curious.... You never really hear teachers saying "after x amount if years, 3 masters, 4 certifications, and hundreds of hours of professional development- why don't I get paid as much as a xyz...."

FWIW I compare my salary to anyone who makes more than me Chat Icon

Ummm the second post on this topic says exactly thisChat Icon

Kudos to them. Being a teacher is something I could never do. I always think, if they have personal issues they can't just sit at their desk and hide their emotions quietly. They have to always be "on" and upbeat and encouraging, even during personal issues and tragedies.

Amen. My children's teachers deserve every dollar they make. I could never in a million years deal with a room full of children all day, never mind the PARENTS!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Thanks! These statements are so true! I love being a teacher. It is such a challenge but so rewarding! Yes, it's good money but I've definitely never heard anyone say they became a teacher for the moneyChat Icon Love this saying and I feel it is so true (for most- of course there's always a few bad eggs)...... Nope.. all i have is a high school diploma Chat Icon

Could this be the reason? I mean why would you be paid the same as a teacher with degrees?

Chat Icon

Because I'm old enough that with my experience in my field a degree is unnecessary. I've done my time. I was actually complimenting the teachers and their choices. I'm not going to get into a tit-for-tat over those with degrees 'deserve' to make more than those of us who couldn't afford to go to college yet somehow made our lives successful.

I have actually gone back to college (for myself) with clear understanding that the company worked for then and now will NOT readjust salary based on a degree. Also when interviewing for a new job, a degree would be nice but I am chosen OVER those with degrees because of my experience and knowledge in the industry.

The answer above was to answer why don't I become an arts and crafts teacher. The answer was I have only a High School diploma. She asked if I had a BA. If I had a BA in something would I choose to go back and become a teacher? Prehaps. It seems intriguing and I love working with kids.

Again don't take any of MY comments on teachers as "they don't deserve to make more than me" because I never said that.

I'm proud of my High School Diploma
I'm proud of the success I have
I don't NEED a degree
Yes, I want one and I'm working on it
But not having a degree does not make me less of a person
Less of a valuable employee
Less of a worthy employee
Less burdened by debt
Less deserving of a valid salary to the work I do
Less capable of any task given to me
Less in any way shape or form to those around me with a degree.

(you could say that is as sensitive as subject to me as it is to imply teachers got it 'easy' and are over paid)

Not everyone can affor it hence the astronomical student loans.. it's was a choice, we all make choices you chose not to carry that burden.

I think that all depends on where you live and your lifestyle as my friends from h.s. are all making double + my salary as teachers.

Chose not to? Really?
I sat there and said "School and career and future" orrr... "f-it, lets work 2 jobs at a time, live in a hell hole and barely eat" yeah thats how it went.

right

thanks for clearing that up for me. Cause I really have always wondered why I didn't go to college. Now I know, its because I *chose* not to.

Chat Icon

ETA: I went to college actually took me 5yrs to pay off that loan for one year. But I didn't 'choose' to quit. Altho I'm sure youll tell me I did. Because all barely 18yr olds know about choices and I guess you're right I could have chosen to be a whore and sell my body to afford a few more credits, maybe if i sold drugs on the side, did some petty thefts, I could have swung it.

I think there is something to be said about choosing your future at 18. It is very difficult for most and very stressful. I went to college, graduated, was then depressed because I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life. I went to work in NY in business and hated it. Only then did I decide to go back and get my Masters for Teaching. I was older and wiser and had the means and the desire to do it. 9 years later I am happy in my profession (if not still stressed lol). Point is, we shouldn't judge others because they didn't choose the "right" path because somebody's right can be somebody elses "wrong"!

I think wanting to become a teacher is very common especially when we are children. A we grow and life happens other choices are often made. As an adult you reflect back at how you wanted to be a teacher someday, and then start comparing salary and most especially quality of life. Being off for the summer, school holidays and making over 110,000 a year have made my sister in law extremely jealous and compromised my relationship with her. (she looked up our salaries- matter of public record and available for all to see) She and her hubby love to bash teachers at family events. So silly as there are three teachers in the family, so you are really talking to the wrong crowd. I just ignore her comments as I know they are from a jealous heart. I suspect many other negative comments stem from jealousy as well.

I believe that there is no better investment than the education of our children. I am glad that teachers are getting paid better so that quality teachers will be attracted to teaching jobs.

I was always under the impression that teachers were not well paid. It is relative though. The few friends I have who are teachers or former teachers tell me they are struggling financially or they did not go back to work after having the 2nd child because the cost of daycare did not leave much left and it was not worth it.
