I think sometimes there is no other better choice. People get hurt on the job making them unable to continue THAT job (maybe a job they have done their whole life, a job they have trained years for or the only thing they know how to do) why not go on disability? Honestly? Should they now go and search for a new job that they CAN do with their injuries (which we all know especially now a days are hard to come by) and probably for less money than they were making at their job? I don't know that I wouldn't make that same choice if I got injured to where I couldn't preform my job requirements anymore.
My dad is was on disability and able to retire on 3/4. He was a court officer and injured his wrist restraining a prisoner. He had already worked for 20 ish years. What was he suppose to do? Where was he going to find another job, doing what? Making what amount of money? I doubt it would be as much as he was making. He looks fine but if you knew him he has had surgeries and has issues doing daily tasks with his hand.

Ok, I'll bite.
I am considering applying for disability. I have a rare brain disorder. I was just diagnosed in June but I've been sick for many years. The doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. I had nearly given up when one morning I woke up with pain and blurry vision in my left eye. I went through a series of invasive and less invasive tests, and then I was finally diagnosed. Although it was upsetting to be diagnosed with a life-long disease, I felt like I was finally getting some answers, and I hoped that with treatment I could get my life back and be normal again.
I'm very young. I had the same job for 10 years, and I've worked for half of my life. I can't even put into words how much I miss working. I can't even think about it without crying, and it has nothing to do with the money. I just loved it and now it's over.
I don't know if I'm ever going to get better, or worse god forbid. I can tell you that I'm very afraid. I'm only considering disability because I'm afraid. What if my husband loses his job? I can't have a lapse in medical care. I need medication, spinal taps, possibly surgery and revisions. What if he leaves me or something happens to him?
I want people to understand that this isn't something that you just jump into. You don't wake up one day and say hey I don't feel like working anymore. I haven't worked in almost a year and I still have not applied.
Most of my friends don't know that I'm sick. It's not something I'm ready to admit, not even to myself. It doesn't mean anything that a person doesn't look sick. I look sick now but I didn't for quite a while, and I'm sure I could still fool you on a good day. It doesn't mean that I don't spend half of my day laying down, and the other half trying not to fall down. It doesn't mean that I'm not in constant pain.
I have a point and here it is. How many trips to Vegas can you take on a few hundred dollars a month? Live and let live. Be happy it's not you.
and this is exactly why I *try* not to jump to conclusions...
I pray that you get through this...

the thing is with disability... Aside from those who truly NEED it.... those who want so desperately to get back to work and physically or mentally CAN'T, disability can be "disabling..."
During my internships in the mental health field I cannot tell you how many times I came across people who were on disability and got too used to (and *safe*) being on it to the point where it inhibited them from progressing and healing...
I have never encountered anyone on flights to vegas who were on disability... I wouldn't even know how to spot those people out...

I also agree with this 1000%. Many people have it drilled into their head to not play around with their benefits because they may lose them. And frequently it's by their own FAMILY or other people around them.
As an aside, I know many people who are certainly not disabled, but cannot find work, and it can really do something to the mind.
I know some people who gave up their jobs to raise their kids even, and have turned a little looney for lack of a better term.

Ahhh, refer back to some old LIF jokes and everyone reads a thread!!!! So, if I want people to read my blog or my business posts I have to make "inside LIF jokes."
Well:
1: wearing Orthodox shoes does not qualify a person for disability. I happen to know that the person who needed the orthodox shoes is gainfully employed.
2. When Superglue Jesus cut off his foot, he was on so much pain that he could not work. We went to DSS but they wanted him to go to workfare. He said he was in too much pain. So they said to try for SSI. But in order to collect disability you have to be expected to be out of work for a year. By the time a year went by, the superglue had dried and his pain was not so bad. He went on short term disability but he never did get permanent disability. He had to go back to work as a carpenter even though he had some arthritic changes from the procedure.
(I found myself unable to write about Jesus from my professional LIF account).
3. I'd be happy to represent Erin Sayer on a mental health disability. Unless of course you feel that she should continue to work with the public. She may also have eyesight issues.
4. If you run a puppy mill and a dog bites you, can you file for disability even though you are a vile person?

I think all of us here know or know of someone who abuses the system. Either disability, welfare, etc. so it makes us jaded. I would LIKE to think that most people who use government assistance do it because they have no other choice but no one can negate the fact that for every few people who use government assistance out of necessity there are 1 or 2 who abuse it.
