Savory Oatmeal?
Just made some oatmeal with cinnamon and sugar for breakfast (it's my last resort when there is nothing else available in the house), but I hate it. I was thinking a savory oatmeal would be better.
Has anyone ever made a savory version? What did you put in it?

Re: Savory Oatmeal?
Is it the sweet taste you don't like ?
I've never tried savory, but I think I would start with a bit of butter and cheese, carefully tasting for salt. Sort of like cheese grits but with oatmeal.

Re: Savory Oatmeal?
I usually use milk, oats, a sweetener (sometimes sugar, splenda, brown sugar or agave), cinnamon sticks and 1-2 cloves depending on how much I'm making, It gives it a nice flavor. Sometimes I'll mix in some raisins, mixed nuts or dried cranberries in my bowl.

Re: Savory Oatmeal?
Maybe it's the texture?
For me, I only like steel cut oatmeal.
This is what I get during the week at Panera with strawberries, walnuts and brown sugar.
Trader Joe's does sell a similar version and you can get it where you can either make it on the stove yourself, or buy it frozen and heat up in the microwave.
You can also get it at the grocery store but I don't think it cooks as fast as the TJ's version.

Savory Oatmeal?
I actually hate plain oatmeal but recently started eating it with a drizzle of olive oil and some sea salt. It was delicious! Sounds weird but was really good.

Sounds like mashed potatoes in a strange way.

Re: Savory Oatmeal?
Now I'm intrigued. Oats are so flavor neutral I guess thay can go savory as well as sweet. I am going to try a batch with butter and cheese, one version cooked in milk the way I like and one version cooked with water.

Re: Savory Oatmeal?
So yesterday I made oatmeal with cheese and a over medium egg. It was pretty good. I'm going to try other combinations as well.
Also thanks for the steel oats suggestions. I'm going to go buy some later today.
I also found some interesting recipies I might try. . .
