At what week were your twins born?

I'm 33 weeks and the doctor is trying to hold me off for at least another two weeks (having lots of contractions, horrible swelling, etc.). At what week were your twins born and did they need to be in the NICU? Did they have any issues if they came sooner than expected? And how are they doing now?

I'm starting to get a bit anxious about an earlier than anticipated delivery Chat Icon

At what week were your twins born?

Mine came at 32 weeks. DD was 2lbs 14oz and DS was 4lbs 2oz. DD came out screaming her head off and was taken to the NICU. But she was able to breath on her own with no oxygen. DS was rushed to the NICU and had to be intubated. He didn't come out screaming and could not breath on his own. They were in there for 30 days exactly. It definitely is rough but NICU nurses and drs are amazing! Before my twins were born, the dr came in and said "if you deliver anytime soon, from the money they are born to the moment they step foot out of this hospital, they belong to us. We do what we need to do to keep your kids alive". That's exactly how he put it. I freaked at first when he said that an when they were first born. Seeing how small she was and all te tubes and wires in him. But after the first day,l and speaking to all the nurses, I knew they were in the best hands possible. Now, they're almost 2 and you would never know they were preemies. The only issue DS has is when he gets sick with a cold, it almost always goes into his Chest and I have to stop givin him milk because it is too thick and he pukes it up. You're already at 33 weeks so that's great! Everyday you make it is a milestone right now. Obviously the longer they cook the better. But you really are at such a great point now!

One piece of advice I will give you if they are born early. NOONE will ever understand what it is to have a preemie. The hospital will drill it into your head to keep all kids away and if anyone was even near someone with a cold, they can't see the babies. If they get sick, hey cam go back to the hospital and be exppsed to more sickness! Family and friends will get offended. They will think you're over reacting because they have no idea what it's like. One thing I learned is to not care about everyone's feelings! Now, it's about your family. Good luck!!

Mine were born at 30 weeks. They were in the NICU for 5 weeks. Although we were warned that they could have some set-backs, they never did. They thrived. And now they are 2 wild and crazy 2 year olds.

Whatever happens, Im sure they will be fine, even if they need to be in the NICU. Hang in there! Chat Icon

Re: At what week were your twins born?

Mine were born at 35 weeks. Baby a was 6lbs 10oz and was in the nicu for a week since he was born with a pulmonary stenosis and needed a procedure which we knew about before he was born. If he did not have the stenosis he would not have needed to be in the nicu. Baby b was born at 3 lbs 10 oz and was considered IUGR (interjecting growth retardation) so he had to stay for a month since he got NEC when he was a week old. He got NEC because he was so small and basically stopped growing inside of me at 30 weeks. So he was a 35 weeker but he was really like a 30 weeker. He had a immature liver, immature intestines but never needed oxygen and had normal lung function.

My dr always talked about getting me to 30 weeks. Then at 30 the goal was 35. I was induced since baby b was not growing anymore and his twin was growing faster so we needed to get them out but for some reason twins lungs will develop faster so as long as the lungs are good and they are good sizes you should be okay.

Good luck!

Re: At what week were your twins born?

My mono-di twins were born at 37w2d via emergency c-section. I had gone in that morning for a growth sono. Baby A showed no growth from previous sono done 2 weeks prior.

Baby A was born 4lbs12oz Baby B was 6lbs. Neither went to the NICU. Baby A did stay in the nursery a bit in the beginning because she was having problems maintaining body temperature. But we all went home together. Also, I EBF'd so by the time we were discharged baby a was down to 4lb8oz and baby b was around 5lbs10oz.

Thank you all so much for the feedback! I am so happy to hear that all of your Chat Icon Chat Icon are doing well and thriving! Definitely reassuring Chat Icon

I had a growth sono at 32w4d and Baby A is estimated at 5 1/2 lbs and Baby B is about 5 lbs! Definitely on the bigger side, which I guess is a good thing just in case I do go early! I'm hoping to hang on at least two more weeks so I'll be 35 weeks.

At what week were your twins born?

I had my girls at 36 weeks. Baby A was 6lbs 2 oz and Baby B was 5lbs 12 oz. The growth sono had showed Baby A at that weight pretty much exactly and Baby B was measured bigger then she was by about a pound. Baby A was in the NICU and stayed 2 days after I left. THe reason was she had fluid in her lungs which is very common in even a single pregnancy. Good luck and try not to worry (easier said then done I know).

Re: At what week were your twins born?

mine were born at 27 weeks and spent many months in the NICU especially my son who faced a lot of complications that we are still dealing with, but I won't go into details since you are already way further along then I am. I just wanted to wish you the best!! Hopefully you can keep those babies cookin a few extra weeks! Every day they stay in your belly really makes a difference! 36 weeks, baby A was 6lbs 11oz and baby B was 5lbs 8 oz.

A went to the nicu for 2 days, her breathing was a little erratic so they sent her for observation.

Both are doing well now at 4 weeks & gaining weight.

Good Luck!

Mine were born at 36 weeks to the day and thankfully they didn't have any issues or go to the NICU at all.

My girls were born at 35w4d. They spent 6 days in the NICU before being discharged.

They will be 1 yr on 11/5 and they are doing great! You would never know they were born early...After their first couple weeks of life, the doctors didn't even measure them on the preemie charts.

Re: At what week were your twins born?

I delivered via scheduled c-section at 38 weeks. All my doctors kept telling me I would go into labor before then because I am a short person (4'11"). They all were convinced I would go sooner than my scheduled c-section. I had to schedule a c-section because my boy (baby A) was breech.

Where are you having your twins?

FYI- Babies born at Stony Brook Hospital before 36 weeks gestation must go to the NICU, no exceptions...

I'm delivering at Mercy. If they are born on the earlier
Side, I know they will probably wind up in the NICU and I'm okay with that....as long as they get the care they need! Chat Icon

It is good to get yourself mentally prepared. i totally had my head in the clouds about it. Even after the head of the NICU told me a few hours before my girls were born that they would be with him and need assistance. I ignored it all and believed MY girls would be big and strong and fine. Obviously that wasn't the case!!!

Re: At what week were your twins born?

35 weeks. 5.14 and 6.3. My smaller one spent 9 days in the NICU and his brother was there for 7. Perfect and healthy today(one of my sons had a congenital kidney blockage but I don't think it had to do with prematurity)
