Going into labor during storm
I'm not close to labor, but it was one of my first thoughts for those of you who are due around this time. Hopefully your LO will know to come a little later -- GOOD LUCK!

Re: Going into labor during storm
I'm a little nervous...I'll be 40 weeks on Wednesday...I'm more worried about having the baby and having to come home to no power if we get hit bad...I stocked up on water and powdered formula just in case...my dh on the other hand thinks it will make for a good story to tell When she's older...lol

Going into labor during storm
I'm so nervous about this, and was about to post it. This may be a dumb question, but if we go into labor during the storm is it safer to call an ambulance or go to the hositpal? As you can tell I am kind of freaking out.

Personally, I wouldnt call an ambulance because my closest hospital is not the one I plan on delivering at! The ambulance will only bring you to the one closest to your house.

Re: Going into labor during storm
My due date is Thursday and I'm not nervous at all. It does help that I live five minutes from the hospital, though I don't know how easy it will be for my doctor to get there. But whatever it is, I can't do anything about it, it's all out of my control, so I'm just going to sit here and relax and eat my Popems!

That is actually not true. They will bring you wherever you want to go
BUT I don't know if that would be true during a hurricane, etc.

Re: Going into labor during storm
my mom was a delivery room nurse and swears that it was ALWAYS busier during a storm or a full moon, due to the change in pressure in the air. the app on my phone says statistics don't support that. who knows... i tend to believe my mom. i'm partial i was due on the 23rd... and still no baby. part of me does hope this storm sparks something... the other part of me is nervous about having her and coming home to no electricty. or the fact that my dr's office cancelled my appt for tomorrow. when you're overdue, you're supposed to have sono's and be monitored to check movement, fluid etc. missing out on that makes me nervous. so i just want to go into labor already or have this storm hurry up and pass so i know i made it through okay.

That is not necessarily true. It depends what ambulance is dispatched to your house - a hospital ambulance vs a county one. At least that's true in Nassau. And during a storm, there's no guarantee they'll take you to your hospital of choice.

That's the case in the 5 boroughs. I have a lot of experience with it.

As do I, as long as they call telemetry they can take you wherever you request

It all depends who you call...if you call 911 you will most likely go to the closest hospital. If you call an ambulance company they will take you wherever you want.

crashing here, but I was just having a conversation yesterday with someone who works at a hospital and she was told to sleep there last night. If your doctor was on call, it's likely he was told to camp out at the hospital and is already there.
Just thought I'd share.. Good luck!

Re: Going into labor during storm
I am surprised that those closest to their delivery date were not advised to go to the hospital now (36+ weeks). I am living in Miami and that is what we do here. Don't worry about a doctor being there because there will be mandatory physicians that will be required to stay in house (I am a doc myself and that is always the case). Being down here in Florida now, we are use to the storms and pretty prepared so we take lots of precautions.
