No. We're right on the cusp. One corner of our block is zone a, the other side is zone b. plus we're on the third floor apartment. I feel fairly safe.

Please people, if you are told to go, go. There is ZERO reason to put your life, and a police and fire in jeopardy to try and get you. Just leave.

I completely agree, especially as the wife of a cop. If you're told to go, GO.

MY husband is a cop in the rockaways. He should be evacuating, but instead he has to stay behind because there is always somebody who refuses to evacuate. They are risking their own lives and his. I am so upset.

This, I worked a few Hurricanes when I lived in the Keys and it always made me why people don't leave. I have 0 sympathy for people that don't leave, and in light of Hurricane Katrina I don't see how anybody would NOT evac if they could. It's not just you, but the people that you may need that you are endangering.

In my town in the mandatory evac areas, the the cops tell the people if they don't go, it is at their own risk bc they and the fire dept will not be able to help them if they don't.

Re: If you live in ZONE A are you evacuating...??
Is it true you won't get emergency help if you stay in an evacuated zone?
For those staying, what is your reasoning?
We are b but are staying with mil in a c. I doubt the water would get in my house but I don't even want to deal with my car getting messed up.

Technically true I believe, but in reality not likely that they won't help you if you're really in danger.

We were told this during Irene. If we weren't gone by the evacuation time and ran into trouble, they were under no obligation to assist us. That's all DH had to hear and we were out of there!

My husband is from Rockaway and no one leaves, it is nuts but they don't. Except my SIL she can to us during Irene and is back this go round the rest of our family and friends refuse to leave

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today signed an Evacuation Order, effective 2:00 p.m. today, which requires a Mandatory Evacuation of all residents living in a flood or storm surge zone. This area is defined as south of Sunrise Highway, from the Queens line to Rockville Centre and South of Merrick Road, from Rockville Centre to the Nassau-Suffolk border.

If you live in ZONE A are you evacuating...??
I got a recorded call from Mangano's office this afternoon saying that everyone in a "flood or storm surge zone" must evacuate - not sure why I got that call because I'm not in that area as defined - unless everyone in the county got that call... I'm curious though as to what "zone" I'm in and I don't see it on the county website.

My mom is right on the border of surge zone 1 and zone 2 in Suffolk. Her apartment is about 15 feet from a canal. She's not planning on leaving.

I'm starting to think zone A, B, etc. is a NYC way of categorizing. On the nassau co. webite they just refer to "categories".

If you live in ZONE A are you evacuating...??
I evacuated earlier tonight. I do not see any reason to put my safety or the safety of rescue workers at risk just to stay in my apartment. We were told that we needed to leave and we did. At high tide this afternoon the water was already splashing against the gate to the beach at the end of my block and that was a couple of hours before we were told to evacuate. I do not want to think about high tide tomorrow night with a storm and a full moon. My apartment is on the second floor with little chance of flooding but that does not keep me safe from falling trees or downed power lines. During Irene the winds tore two huge mature trees out of the ground and luckily they landed away from the house other wise they would have landed in my bedroom.

Sorry I don't get it- yea maybe you were lucky in Irene but every storm is different- why stay and put yourself and first responders in danger- selfish.

Re: If you live in ZONE A are you evacuating...??
I left babylon- I am south on montaulk and I normally park my car by the water
I am not the 3rd floor- but I saw no point in getting stuck- and losing my car- and dealing with all that so I could sit on my own couch- I am at a friends
it's not like staying will save your house
