Assistance Programs for Single Mom
One of my student's mom came to conferences today and she is really overwhelmed. She has two kids under 6 with PDD, and two teenagers (who are wild, from what I understand). She really needs some sort of at-home assistance. She is dealing with some pretty challenging behaviors, and really needs either family therapy or some behavior coaching. The kid in my class has no behavior issues at school, so I can't even refer him for in-school counseling. She is on public assistance, so food/housing is not the main need. Does anyone know of any programs I can refer her to? I teach in the Bronx.

Re: Assistance Programs for Single Mom
It depends how old the kids are.
The one closer to 6 has already aged out of early intervention services, the other one may be eligible. If the child in school has a diagnosis and an IEP than obtaining services is relatively straightforward. If he does not, the first step is definitely a discussion with the school counselor about obtaining an evaluation to lead to an IEP. Depending on the results of an evaluation and the diagnosis (if any), the type and amount of services will vary. The first steps are definitely getting both children evaluated. The child in school (if it is a public school) is eligible for an evaluation by the DoE.
If you FM me I can probably help more. I will also check into some of the agencies I know of in the Bronx that deal with service coordination and Medicaid Waiver programs.

Re: Assistance Programs for Single Mom
I should clarify-both children receive services (speech, OT, PT) and the older on is in a District 75 special ed. program already. I am more looking for programs that might support the mother. Thanks ladies!

Re: Assistance Programs for Single Mom
I was going to suggest looking into a waiver program/SC as well.
Also I go to this site often if I am looking for resources by zipcode
