Selective Coverage of LI News
This is my first time posting on LI Families... I'm trying to raise awareness of the lack of news coverage of crimes in selective areas of LI.
I'm writing to voice my frustration and anger over the lack of news coverage of a violent crime that occurred in Stony Brook on November 20th. The people of the Three Village community are becoming aware of how the news media and law enforcement deliberately cover-up crimes that effect this area. We understand that our local government needs to maintain the illusion that Setauket and Stony Brook are crime free in order to justify the $20,000 in property taxes that are consistently raised on an annual basis. What's truly unfortunate is that the news media enables them to get away with this.
Is anyone aware that a women was raped on November 20th in a Stony Brook home? I didn't see a single minutes coverage of this on News12, nor did I see a single story devoted to this in print or on the Internet. It wasn't until the perpetrator was apprehended that the news broke. Isn't it important that the community be aware that violent crimes and burglaries are occurring in their neighborhoods? Isn't it possible that covering these stories might help to prevent and deter subsequent acts?
- Angry

Just google Patrick O'Sullivan and Stony Brook.

Also, I understand your frustration, but you can't be entirely upset with the news organizations. They only catch wind of such crimes if a reporter may be friendly with a detective at the local precint, or if the local PD puts the crime on the blotter for the reporters/public to see.
They may have waited for some reason before releasing information - and sometimes they do that in order to catch the suspect. Just offering another point of view.

Selective Coverage of LI News
The crime occurred on November 20th. Emails were circulated between residents of the community about rumors of a home invasion and rape, but I scoured the Internet, local papers, and contacted the police. I actually thought it might be a fake story. Absolutely nothing was reported until this guy was caught. This is typical for coverage of any crime that occurs in the Three Villages and I'm tired of it.

Yes. I just edited above why that may be - it may be because of an ongoing investigation, I would assume. I also would think there may be more sensitivity with a rape victim than someone who just had their house robbed, KWIM?
But who knows.

I saw an article on Patch before the guy was caught. Three Village Patch . In fact, I saw it on my fb feed, and shared it. Port Jeff patch had it as well.

Selective Coverage of LI News
I can site other examples of violent acts and property crimes that have not received any media coverage. I know that I'm not the only person who has noticed this and it's openly discussed in our community. If it wasn't a consistent trend, I might be able to attribute this to protecting an investigation.

Maybe you could set up a blog about local crimes and share it with your neighbors? Sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands.

Selective Coverage of LI News
i started a facebook page for my town, and now practically everyone is a member, and we all alert each other about stuff like that. And my neighbor created a crimestoppers page that links to mine. look in to it. you can't depend on the media. if you create a page and you invite your neighbors, you would be surpised how many people join. good luck

I appreciate the suggestion. Many in our community were alerted about this incident by emails that were forwarded by individuals who became aware of what occurred. This is how The Patch learned about the story, many people in the community began contacting local media outlets to verify the story. I agree that a dedicated page would be helpful. Thank you

Re: Selective Coverage of LI News
If you look at the patch, there are many many crimes that are not covered by the mainstream media. I think it would be impossible to cover every single news story and would cause widespread panic as well.

Re: Selective Coverage of LI News
I understand your frustration. I was actually a bit perplexed after reading about it (after the arrest) why it was that a home invasion resulting in a sexual assault involving a gun was not widely reported. I have family in the Setauket/St. Brook area (my niece is 20) and I think it would have been important information for them to have.

Re: Selective Coverage of LI News
I'm so glad this was posted!! I live in Setauket, and I heard about the rape through several neighbors. I didn't really believe it because it was NO WHERE on the news until yesterday. Umm, why weren't we alerted that a dangerous rapist with a weapon was on the loose until after he was caught, 10+ days after the fact?! News 12 stinks. I guess I'll have to start reading the Patch from now on.
On a similar note, a little over a year ago there was a man shot outside his house, not far from Ward Melville H.S. It was nowhere on News 12 ever. I'm sorry, but this would have been a top story if it happened anywhere else on L.I.

Re: Selective Coverage of LI News
In all history, the NEWS..(paprers, shows etc) tell US whats news.
They report what they want, and tell us what they feel the news SHOUDL be.
This will never change.

Selective Coverage of LI News
THere are crimes all over LI that do not make the news. While I understand it is distrubing to the residents of that area its not done just to that town or towns. It happens all over.

Exactly. If you have any friends that are cops ask them about what really goes on versus what's on the news, it's stunning how much isn't reported.
