How hard is it to get
Half-day preschool and afternoon in-home services for a 3- year old with autism? I just feel that such an arrangement would be much better for my son than a full-day preschool with no in-home services.

I would say extremely difficult. From the school district's point of view, if your child needs afternoon at home services then your child should be in school full-time. that being said, a lot depends on your school district

why would you think you would NOT get home services in a full day program?? My son did, and still does.

This is what I have noticed recently. I'm a SEIT and it was very common in the past to get half day preschool and then home hours in the afternoon. Now, as the previous poster said . . Some districts say that if your child needs 1:1 home services then they should be in a more restrictive full time program. I don't necessarily agree and this was a battle that we had last year for one of my students. The parents had to put the child into a developmental preschool instead of a typical preschool with a SEIT for 1/2 the time.

How hard is it to get
My DS was in 1/2 day preschool and got in home services (mostly at daycare) while he was in EI. It really was the best of both worlds. My district was not going to allow this, they want him in a full day program. It's more cost effective for them, and there's probably a lot less paperwork, because they are dealing with one school/agency instead of several. The benefit of a full day program, however, is that the team is all in one place and can better coordinate with one another to work on problem areas in different settings, and allow for better carryover of skills. There is also less transition through the day for the child.
Both ways have their pros and cons, but I don't think the district is going to go for it. My EI coordinator told me that if they found a full day program for him, that was where he was going, period.
