Re: roku?

I have two. An original in the bedroom and a Roku2 in the living room. We love it! we use it to stream netflix, hulu and Vudu on the TV. Like the PP said you plug it into your tv and it works off of your wifi to stream the content to your tv. There is also a Youtube channel and lots of other private channels that you could get. We no longer have cable just an antenna on the tv for local channels and roku for everything else. Has been working really well for over a year now.

Re: roku?

Looooooooove our Roku. We have an original Roku and a new Roku 2XS. It's awesome and DD (4) is a whiz at navigating through them and loading up her own shows, games, and music. We love Netflix, Vudu, Mog, Pandora, etc.

It's basically a little device that allows you to stream content (movies, music, pics, games etc) to your TV. Think on demand shows, movies, music, and more. Realize, some "channels" are free but the good channels with lots of content, like Netflix and Hulu, do charge monthly for their service but its sooooooooo worth it. Love the Roku, you will be glad you got it!!!

Can you watch shows like dexter, homeland etc?
No. These shows are only available on showtime or sho.com if you are a subscribing member to showtime.

Can dh watch live football?
No. This a box for streaming previously recorded shows. If you want to watch live tv is will have to be through your cable provider or local tv through an antenna

I am on the website, i am confused. What channels are INCLUDED for free? Or are there none?
There are a bunch of Free channels. But I think you may be confused about the word channel. Netflix is a channel on the Roku, Hulu is a channel. Vudu is a channel. All of these are free to add but you pay for the subscription. I have a Netflix subscription and a Hulu subscription. With Vudu you have to pay to rent or own movies with no monthly subscription.

What are the best paid ones to buy??
This depends on what you are looking for.

Basically the Roku takes all of the content that you have access to either by a monthly subscription (like Netflix and Hulu) and also free content that can be found on the internet and it pools it all in one place. There are of course sacrifices that have to be made for certain things though. If you are looking to get this so that you can get rid of cable but you are looking for shows that are on paid cable channels like HBO and showtime this probably isn't the best thing for you. If you don't mind paying for episodes or seasons than you can use the Amazon channel and purchase the seasons - that's the only way to get around it, but its another cost, and you won't get them right after they air.

Actually, if you pay for Netflix streaming then yes, shows like Dexter, Mad Men, Breaking Bad and a gazillion others are in there to stream. I actually started watching Dexter through the Roku. :o).

No, you cannot watch live football. Roku is not meant for live broadcasts.

And everything else she said. lol.

ETA - Looks like they pulled Dexter for streaming, use to be in there. Now it's discs only.

Unless you pay for something like Hulu, which is mainly network shows, you can't get current seasons of shows. Netflix generally gets the newer season of a show a few months after it airs on TV.

roku? added questions!

I use amazon prime with my Roku and can watch some shows current season (like Sons of Anarchy) through it.

HBOGo is on it if you have an HBO subsciription and there is 10 times more content on it than HBOOnDemand. They have every episode of every series they've aired which is awesome.

We just got one for our bedroom and are going to get another and cancel the movie channels (except HBO)

Re: roku? added questions!

We have roku but we only use netflix and hulu through it. netflix you have to pay extra for and hulu is included so its free.

Both services included certain shows you would watch on TV. Hulu is more current shows and Roku is more movies and old series. Not all shows are on either so you have to check if your favorite shows are going to be offered. im not sure if dexter and homeland are offerred though they may be on the showtime roku app(which im guessing you would have to pay extra for).

Pandora is a free service so we have that on when not watching TV.

Shutterfly pics can be displayed also through the free included app and as a screensaver so your pics can be streaming all day on the TV(if you want that lol).

We love it.

As far as the more complex stuff and new channels, we have never bothered but there are plenty of sports channels but pretty sure you have to pay for them.

Just wanted to say, Hulu is NOT free. There is a monthly subscription fee. I think it's about $8.

Nope. I don't know if SHowtime has a service like HBOGo, but even to use that you need to subscribe to the channel through your cable

Re: roku? added questions!

We don't have a Roku, but we use our Blu Ray Player and Xbox the same way.

We watch Movies and TV shows (old seasons of Weeds and some other Premium shows are on there..but not the most recent. There's a lot on there though - Lost, BattleStar Galactica, Arrested Development, Psych, Cheers, SportsNite..but all OLD shows or OLD seasons, NOT the current season). New Arrested Development will Netflix exclusive. There is a FEE for Netflix monthly.

Hulu (also a fee $8) - Some older movies and older TV (Alf, Degrassi Jr high!), but also current episiodes of current TV shows (network and some cable, NOT Premium channels).

Amazon prime - Free if you're a prime member..DH pays for this I don't know the fee. Movies and TV shows. Some of the movies tend to be more current than Netflix, but I think all 3 services have a LOT of overlap. You can also pay to "rent" current movies through amazon, and if a DVD you bought has a digital copy, yuo can often watch it through this.

Watch videos from Youtube (free)

HBOGo - Watch current and past TV Shows and Movies from HBO. Free if you already subscribe to HBO.

Other than that I know there are other services, but I don't use them so I don't know about them

I *think* Showtime has it's own channel on Roku- free for subscribers.
