Making Friends on Long Island
I'd love to hear some suggestions from FHF members on how to meet both individual and "couples" friends on Long Island. We are not originally from LI so no family here. DH and I both work full time in good jobs, we don't have any children together, and have a wide variety of interests. We like to go to the movies, go out for a drink or even a cup of coffee!, attend sports events, fairs, festivals, etc. Yet, probably because we don't have children together (DH has a 21 year old daughter from a prior marriage), a huge "stockpile" of potential friendships through school/playgroups/family connections is not available. It doesn't matter to us if our friends have one, two or a football team of children .
I've put feelers out at work, but the company can be considered a bit cutthroat/political (hardly anyone socializes unless it is a business event) so I've had no luck there.
Especially around the holidays, with our families so far away, we would love to find some new friends. But how?

Re: Making Friends on Long Island
Try meetup.com! There are plenty of groups dedicated to various interests around the island.

I find myself in a very similar situation. DH has children (14 and 20) from his prior marriage. Most of my friends are single and although they are great, they are usually interested in going out to bars, etc and my best friend moved across the country last year. When I was single I joined meetup and made some friends through that. I have "joined" some women's social groups, but haven't attended any of their events yet.

If you and DH like bowling, try joining a couples bowling league. DH and I met so many people from our league, we actually had a whole table at our wedding for our bowling friends.

Re: Making Friends on Long Island
I don't know if you're into sports, but there are a number of sports leagues on the Island that allow for "free agents." I know a lot of people who made friends this way.
abasports.com, for example, has volleyball, dodgeball and softball.
