again and again.. NOTHING stops madness. You could remove all the guns in the world and put our children in bunkers for school and transport them in armored vehicles. NOTHING WILL STOP MADNESS
mental health care should be the focus.
BUt as the other topic pointed out a man with a 2x4 can walk in with a goal who's not mad - just determined. HE could and would be stopped.

Sorry but we've had armed guards at schools for a VERY long time. My High School was the last school in San Antonio to get an armed cop. Every High School and Middle School in San Antonio has an armed cops on campus. Each district has its own police dept.
In San Antonio, in Texas, in the state with some of the least rigid gun laws, you feel the need to have an armed guard at every school. While I'm over here in Queens, NY and I don't feel that need.
We also don't feel the need for metal detectors and see through backbacks, the horror!
What are you trying to imply? That we are somehow LESS safe because we're in Texas and we have guns? Nowhere is safer when its comes to a madman.
And how can you say the 'least rigid' we dont just hand guns out at 18. By your OWN logic CT has the HARSHEST gun laws and they had this happen to them......
This isn't a state by state thing.. this is a nationwide tragedy. WE NEED MENTAL HEALTH reform!

Re: NRA Conference
Apparently, *during* the NRA press conference, a man-with a gun- walked up & down a road and shot 7 people, including 3 State Troopers (you know, the "good guys with guns") in Blair County, PA. I can't post the link from my phone, but it was on Gawker. This is not the answer. The governing body (not the general membership) of the NRA, and the politicians in their back pockets, are making a mockery of America, to the rest of the world.

I was just coming on to post this. It's absolutely horrible but if this doesn't prove what the NRA said ("The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun") was wrong, I don't know what does. 1 bad guy with a gun vs. 3 good guys with guns.
ETA: Just read that Columbine HS had an armed guard. Look what happened.
Also Fort Hood was full of armed people, that asshole still killed people.

Exactly my thought. Teachers are being excessed from schools and we have a budget for each school to have a guy just standing around with a gun all day?

Re: NRA Conference
I've said it already in reference to the recent happenings but I will say it again because it applies here, too.
I honestly don't even care anymore if you so strongly believe in your right to own a weapon in your own home or whatever. Fine. That is your business.
Nobody will EVER, EVER convince me that putting MORE guns in ANY capacity near our children is the best way to keep them safe. Period.

#1 Food Hood shooting.. they were NOT full of armed people. You can not bring your weapon on base, period. The only people allowed to be on base with a gun is the Military police. This is a misconception that everyone walks around on base with a loaded side arm.
THESE brave soliders would rather have had a gun to shoot that ******* down than let others die:
Secondly... there were 3 armed cops. One was hurt in accident, one was hurt by glass and one was shot in the wrist and in his body armor. Your statement makes me wonder.
Did they stop him? Did he continue to shoot? Would the cops been better without a gun?
Its one thing to argue Average Joe needs no gun but to say the cops having more guns doesnt help is totally different. They are trained. I know England or somewhere over there has no weapons, but I really dont think disarming our own cops should be on the table.

But states with lenient gun laws somehow have higher rates of gun crimes.

I think their idea is silly and would not work. How would we pay for it? However, the lack of security in school is really scary. I live in an extremely safe neighborhood in NJ. The highschool is very close to me as is the elementary school. There is NOTHING stopping some lunatic from entering. NOTHING.

NRA Conference
It's a sad sad day when we resort to having armed guards at every school. IMO we do that and we are claiming defeat. We need to find out why we are the only civilized country having this issue multiple times in a year. A movie theatre, mall, school. When will it stop?
Why is it easier for the NRA to suggest spending millions of dollars arming our schools then to just admit that NO one who is non-military personnel at war should have a weapon that can kill dozens of humans in a mere matter of seconds?
And while yes banning automatic weapons will not guarantee 100% that no one will ever be able to get their hands on one but it damnn well will make it harder for them too. If Adam Lanza did not have access to those guns and wasn't able to purchase them on his own we would never be having this discussion.
And I agree anyone can come into a school with a knife or 2x4 but it is MUCH MUCH easier for people to tackle someone like that then to try to tackle a mad man with an automatic rifle and bullet proof vest.

The Secret Service could not protect Ronald Reagan, James Brady & 2 others from John Hinckley, Jr., who had a HANDGUN. How is one armed officer going to stop an individual, intent on killing & armed with a military-grade ASSAULT WEAPON?

AMEN!!!! It is a sad sad commentary when we even have to entertain the idea of armed guards at all of our schools, just so our children can be safe. WHAT do people need an assault weapon for. I have YET to hear one argument that states WHY that is necessary other than bc the 2nd amendment says I can....I want to know WHY. Yes, you will never eliminate the threat completely, and yes, there will always be an illegal market for them. BUT, just some kid somewhere, in some average American neighborhood, if they are not readily accessible, might NOT go through the trouble of trying to illegally obtain them.

And if they were illegal, you will deter people from buying them not only because it won't be as easy as walking into a store and purchasing one for $500 (just throwing out figures), it will also drive up the prices tremendously and lower the amount of crazies that can actually afford it. Such a simple concept that can prevent tragedy yet some people don't get it.
