Les Miserables -
Who saw it?!!
(Hoping this wasn't already posted) but we saw it Christmas night - after dinner and everyone went home and the night was "over" we went to go see it.
It was sensational - I have to say, it was even better than I thought it was going to be. It was just wonderful - the directing was excellent, the actors were UNBELIEVABLE, and I felt like the emotions of it were SO raw - more than on stage, I think, because you can see the actors up close in film so it gives a whole different perspective.
My stand-out favorite is Russell Crowe. A lot of people weren't sure because he is not known as a vocalist but I thought his voice was EXCELLENT and his portrayal of that character was just flawless. I absolutely love him. I was also very impressed with Marius - the young man who plays him has a phenomenal voice and acting was great too. And, of course, Hugh Jackman just blows me away - he almost gets overlooked in a way because I think we expect him to be so fantastic, KWIM?? But his voice - it was just excellent.
Reviews? What did everyone think? I thought Amanda Seyfried has a very pretty soprano voice - and I think Anne Hathaway did very well too, she is such a talented actress. It was a very emotional film - from start to finish. I left drained!
OK, what did everyone think?!??!!

Re: Les Miserables -
I'm sorry, but I didn't like it. I saw the play many years ago and the only scenes I felt moved by were those relating to the resistance, and that held true for me during the movie. I thought Sasha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham-Carter were great though.

Re: Les Miserables -
I thought it was great!! I actually loved Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathway, which is strange since I usually dislike her! I wasn't a huge fan of Russel Crowe, but I loved the movie!! I've seen the play 8 times so I am a really huge Les Mis fan in general and thought it was a really really great adaptation and the singing was so emotional.

Overall I thought it was good. I loved the scenes from the resistance. I wasn't all that impressed with Amanda Seyfried's voice, but at that same time I didn't realize she could sing at all. I thought Eddie Redmayne was awesome.

Re: Les Miserables -
Just got back...and I loved it! I cried and cried....and then I cried some more! I saw it on stage a few times and have always been blown away by it....but this was the first time seeing it since I've become a mother....and it changed something about it for me....made it so much more raw and real. I could listen to Hugh Jackman sing all day long. Anne Hathaway is perfection. Russell Crowe wasn't my favorite.....but still better than I anticipated. That Eddie guy is fantastically talented! And the little boy was phenomenal!!!!!

Re: Les Miserables -
Oh yeah! I was waiting for someone to post about the movie. Saw the play twice and pretty much memorized the soundtrack. I've also seen the Channel 13 live show they had, which was awesome.
I totally LOVED it! I disagree with you on your two fav choices. "Stars" is one of my fav songs and I think it just wasn't strong enough. Crowe disappointed me. Didn't care that much for Marius too. Didn't find him attractive either. Loved Jackman! That man can do NO wrong. Lol Samantha Barks as Eponine was fantastic!! That girl can sing! Beautiful. Ann Hathaway did a beautiful job as Fontine. She moved me with I Dreamed a Dream. She shined in all her scenes. Usually Cossette bores me and is my least fav charector, but I liked Amanda. She did well. Omg.... The kids stole the show. That little boy blew me away. Oh... And no one mentioned the innkeeper ans his wife. Sasha Baron Cohen was awesome and hysterical. Also loved Helen whatever her name is. I looked forward to all their scenes. Sasha's expressions were too funny. It was a perfect role for the two of them. Oh, and the blonde guy that's Marius friend. He was great too and cute! LOL Ok, I think I got it all.

Les Miserables -
I never saw it on Broadway and always wanted to. I saw the movie today and I really liked it. I cried during "I Dreamed a Dream", "On My Own", and the end.
I love Amanda Seyfried's voice. Sascha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter were great. Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe as well. That little boy was really great!!
I hope it comes back to Broadway so I can finally see it on stage!
ETA: I also cried after Eponine was shot and she sang with Marius.

My dad said that when he went, people applauded after "I Dreamed a Dream" and a couple of other songs.

Re: Les Miserables -
Just got back from seeing it. LOVED it.
Hugh Jackman blew me away as well as Eddie Redmayne..he sings beautifully and with such emotion!! Loved him as Marius. Anne Hathaway was awesome. Russell Crowe...ehhhh still undecided. Just when I thought he was doing fairly well, he sang "Stars" and I just think that role needed MORE. He isn't dark and bold enough to play Javert. He didn't feel as intimidating as the role should have been if that makes sense.
Amanda as Cosette was good but a bit squeaky at times.
did anyone else notice Colm Wilkinson (original Jean Valjean on broadway) played the Bishop?? Loved that!!! He was the ultimate Valjean in my opinion and I wondered if he would be in the movie!!
Overall, fantastic!!!

Re: Les Miserables -
I saw it Christmas night. I loved it EXCEPT for Russell Crowe. I don't think he was strong enough as a character and his voice was way too nasaly. I wish they had recast that particular role. I have seen Les Mis in the touring show, the Broadway version and even in the original theater in London. The London version was the best of course. Russell Crowe was not good, at all.

Les Miserables -
I loved it overall. Anne Hathaway was amazing. Hugh Jackman and Eddie Redmayne were great too, as expected. Russell Crowe was very meh to me. Normally I really like him and think he's a very talented actor. His singing wasn't as terrible as I anticipated but he felt very blah in the role - both his singing and his acting.

THIS!! I noticed that he was playing the Bishop when I saw the full cast list last week and was so excited! What a great role for him to have in the film version of the show.
Loved every second of this movie. Going to see it again tomorrow already

Re: Les Miserables -
Also, I think being that I was so young when I first saw it, I took away more from it and understood the story much deeper...the message re: religion was so much clearer now. How Javert felt he was righteous in following gods will by bringing people to justice but he lacked compassion...and Jean Valjean didn't always follow the "law" but followed his heart and led by example and love & compassion. It was a powerful message about values, I think.

In my opinion it blows the rent adaptation out of the water..no comparison...and I LOVED rent, but what a fantastic job they did with Les Mis! The voices are insanely good!

Re: Les Miserables -
For me, it was phenomenal. The draw back was Russell Crowe. I just didn't like him in the role. So many others could of done a better portrayal in my opinion,

Yessss! Loved this!
Overall I thought the movie was good, but nowhere near as good as the stage production.
I was not happy with Russell Crowe as Javert at all. I would have been happier with a no-name actor with a stronger voice.
The little boy who played Gavroche was perfect
Loved Eddie Redmayne as Marius (his is not usually one of my favorite parts, but I thought he was excellent).

OMG YES!!! I LOVE this. I didn't know it ahead of time and heard his voice and immediately recognized him. I starting hitting DH on the leg so excited and I think the people around us thought I was nuts LOL.
I thought Hugh and Anne were phenomenal. I didn't love love their voices but they were strong enough and their emotional performances carried them beyond anything I expected from them. I feel like every scene with Fantine, I was moved to tears. Definitely has a different affect after becoming a mother.
I was disappointed in Russell. I think he would've been fine in the role if the singing wasn't such a struggle for him. He wasn't nearly strong enough to carry off Javert. I feel like he lost his character while concerned with his vocals. There was no anger, no oomph from him.
Did you guys know they shot every scene while live singing? Like if one person effed up, they reshot the entire scene? I was majorly impressed by this. But I feel like that worked against someone like Crowe who could've really worked on his performance if he didn't have to worry about singing kwim.
Amanda and Eddie were a little nasal-y at times but overall really good. I was surprised Amanda could sing at all never mind hit some of those high notes in their duet and their acting was great. I agree with her performance of Cosette being the first that made me not bored by her.
Sacha & Helena really did well with their roles. I feel like I had the original score stuck in my head and they weren't as "funny" as I remember it. But overall I was surprised that they could sing. lol
I LOVED Aaron Tveit (the guy who led the revolution with Marius) and Eponine. Their voices were fantastic IMO. And I also agree that Gavroche stole the whole.entire.film! What a great little actor! I'm sure this won't be the last we see of him.
I've seen this show on Broadway easily 10 times over the years. I was pleasantly surprised with how well they re-did it and was overall very happy with the final product. I actually can't wait to go see it again!

Re: Les Miserables -
I thought the film was mind blowingly amazing!!!!!
BUT...Russell Crowe was not the best choice for the role. I think my DH could have done a better job!
Hathaway and Jackman had me in tears from their first notes.
Sasha Baron Cohen & Helena Bonem-Carter were perfect for those roles. Loved them!
Amanda Seyfried proved she could sing in "Momma Mia", but in my opinion hit those high notes effortlessly.
I kind of want to go see it again on a Wednesday afternoon with no one in the theater so I can sing along!
