Re: Thoughts: A friend posted on FB today...(current events related)
I was appalled when I first saw this. I was doing observation in a 2nd grade class. This is going back a lot of years so i think maybe it was related to Columbine?
I really still can't get the image of those 8 year olds huddled in a corner out of my head. The fact is, it seems like it did save lives at Sandy hook since those kids and teachers had practiced and could calmly get the kids into that position, but it's such a disturbing reminder of the dangers out there

Re: Thoughts: A friend posted on FB today...(current events related)
I have worked in schools as well and yes, lockdown drills are mandated and were done. In my experience this involved locking all classroom doors, closing the shades, and gathering the children away from points of entry. That is the sad reality of our sick society.
My issue with the OP's friend's post was the hiding in a cabinet. That could be traumatizing and panic inducing for some kids, not to mention potentially dangerous (kids getting crushed, lack of air, forgotten in there), and I wouldn't want my young kid to have to go through something like that for a drill. In my mind, this is crossing the line.

My mom had to practice air-raid drills, and I didn't. It is sad, but each generation has their own scares.
This was my thought too.
Same here... its scary but unfortunately its part of their reality right now.

I have to say, I am really surprised that some people would like their kids to opt out of this because it might scare them.
My kids are terrified of getting shots, but that's not going to stop me from vaccinating them, kwim?

This was my thought too while reading some of the comments on this thread. But again this TOO is a scary part of the society we now live in. Don't make your children do anything they might not like/might scare them - even if it's for their own good.
as for the policy - I think it's wonderful that my child would be able to "practice" so that in case of a real life event everyone - students and teachers would be a little more prepared.
If the worst thing that ever happens is that once or twice I need to have a conversation with my child about bad things that happen, then that's the least of my problems. At least we will have had that conversation and she will hopefully feel like she can talk to me if she ever feels scared about something happening.

I vividly remember doing air raid drills at school in the early 80's. It's a sign of the times we are in. It's sad, but all schools should be doing it

It's required by law to have lockdown drills and fire drills. I'm upset this is the world we live in, not too upset that schools are preparing kids.

For teachers- do you guys get the okay to use your judgement and get the kids out through windows or an outside door?
No, it is not part of the protocol to move them from the classroom. We attended several trainings about the drill, and the thought is that if they are in a line outside the classroom or school, they are easy targets. Scary stuff, but it makes sense. The protocol is really specific. There is one announcement over the loudspeaker, "This is a hard lockdown" and we are to look outside the door, take ANY child in the hallway into our classroom. Once we do that, we cannot open the door for ANYONE (kid, staff, sibling, principal) until the lockdown is lifted. I taught my students where to go if there are in the bathroom (the only place they would ever be without me) by sending them down the hallway with a timer and having them knock on the classroom door of where they would go if they were in the bathroom and there was an emergency when the time went off. Because I know that once the drill is announced, they need to enter a classroom almost immediately, or risk being stuck in the hall, I wanted to make sure they knew exactly what to do if they hear a hard lockdown drill. My students' speech therapist is by the bathroom, so they just go to her. We are to gather them in the room, and stay there, holding up one of three cards-red (emergency "We need help"), green ("we are okay") and a medical card and emergency responders will enter the rooms with red or medical cards first. The kids stay out of the view of the window, and I stand in view of the window. We have a building safety team that stands in the halls and stairways.
What freaks me out is that my DH was asked to be on the Building Response Team at his school, so he has to stand in the hallway in a hard lockdown. They already had the SWAT team once there this year because there was a shooting (gang-related) outside his school.
EDITED to add: I teach students with autism, so I know that they are horrible in unexpected/unfamiliar situations, so I practice it more than a gen. ed. teacher probably does. I don't want them to panic during a drill or God-forbid, a real emergency.

My first reaction was , but as sad as it may be, it's reality. I think it's better that these kids know what to do.

Re: Thoughts: A friend posted on FB today...(current events related)
I work in the school system. These drills do make everyone nervous teachers included. But practice saves lives. I made sure after our drill to explain to the students I was with why we were doing it. We do live in a sick world that is reality. When I was in high school (right after columbine) we had an evacuation because of a bomb threat. Practicing helped the staff and students to think clearly and know what to do when panic set in. The same goes for these drills. From sandy hook there have been changes made in protocol to help keep us safer in the schools and we must practice these protocols. I think it is def the teachers jobs but also the parents jobs to explain why this is being done to easy the anxiety of our children. I know at PTA meetings the safety coordinator speaks to explain what drills are done and how many times each year. They won't deny you that info. But they will not announce when all the drills are if they do are you really preparing? Crazy people don't usually announce themselves before hand

A lockdown drill does not include hiding children in a cabinet! As a mommy and a NYC teacher that is totally wrong!

Also. I would like to be informed of this beforehand and have an option of my kid not participating.
I'm an educator.
It's Federal Law. There is no choice. There is no opt out. Schools must do at least one "lock down" one "lock out" and one evacuation drill at least once a year. And then several fire drills in fall and spring.
Been this way since Columbine.
This amazes me. I work at a private school in the city. In my time there we have done 2 fire drills a year and none of the other drills. I'm very intrigued by this.
Wow private schools get away with so much! Its unreal.

Did this parent call the teacher/ school and ask? Again this is a young child can we really trust the teacher told them to go in a cubby? Maybe they said make sure a stranger can't see you and the child took it to mean hide in a cubby

You def need to check with your team those cards (red, green, and medical cross) are no longer to be used as of I believe a dec 22/23ish meeting because they call attention to people who are safe. It's like a flag saying come and get me. And the hall sweep team is NOT supposed to be in the hall far a hard lockdown. They do sweeps during a soft lock down only. Hard lock down means everyone lock yourself away! Def tell your husband this because its not right and don't want people to get hurt because of inaccurate info

I was Going to say this....good thing the drills had been practiced in CT or the horrific tragedy could have been worse... As a teacher who does practice each year (with parents notified its coming soon, not an exact date) and as a parent it's a sad world we live in but must be prepared for what if....

I brought it up to my supervisor today. It makes me extremely uncomfortable. We literally have no safety measures in place other than a receptionist at the front.

I don't love the idea of hiding in a cabinet...but if hiding my son in a cabinet means saving his life...it's perfectly fine with me. As for scaring them or scarring them for life...presentation is everything and if they go over it in a manner that is sensitive to the age group then I'm perfectly fine with it. I would never want a teacher to be scared to put my son in a cabinet in a real life situation for fear of red tape and how I would react as the parent. ANYTHING that will save a life is ok in my book.

I don't like it.
Chances of something happening are so small.
Yes I know they do happen - but with children that little I would think the teachers being trained and having a plan is more important than having 4yr old kids hiding in a closet once a year.
The main thing is to get the kids to understand we are there to keep them safe and to listen to us
I teach 5th grade and though the boys thought it was fun to hide in the closet they understood the seriousness of the drill and why we were doing it
I have done the drill 3 times with with my class even if the school doesn't run it since sandy hook
We don't want the building to catch fire but we still practice fire drills .... It is all about teaching the kids to be prepared and not to panic if there is an emergency

I wasn't told about the cards. I thought it was funny to be holding it up. I was also trained before Sandy Hook-I understand why they would change it after. I also probably mixed up the soft and hard re: the BRT. Its been a long day. I have to ask my DH about how he was trained because he most def. was in the hallway during a hard lock-down. I thought the BRT was supposed to be in the hall in a hard, but maybe I was trained wrong. I will double check on Mon, thanks!
