Those with an older DC...

I have a few questions:

My DS will be almost 4 by the time the twins arrive.

He still will sit in a stroller now but do you think I will need one next summer? I saw the Joovy "Big Caboose" and I was dying laughing..do I need that?

Also, attention wise..did you do anything special when they were born or came home? Like a present to big brother from the twins?

Any regression issues from the older one?

Any good books to read to prepare him?

Thank you Chat Icon

Re: Those with an older DC...

I am interested in these answers as well...I have a 5 year old. I think a gift from twins is pretty sweet. i just talk to DS about the babies lot, let him feel them in my belly, and ask what he is loking forward to, and tease him that he gets to change all the dirty diapers.Chat Icon

Hoping the transition is a smooth one.

Re: Those with an older DC...

My DD was 4.5 when Chat Icon Chat Icon were born. It went much better than I thought it would. She was hrdly in the stroller anymore. We kept out single strollers & have used one with her only when we went to Six Flags, Disney, zoo types of outings. We did a siblings class at the hospital. It was great. We did get her presents from the twins (Bitty baby twins) and she went to pick out presents to give them too. We talked alot about the impending arrival and made her feel super important. When they were born, the nurses at the hospital made a really big deal when she came. It was cute. It worked out that when DH brought her & my mom, only one twin was in the room. She got to meet her brother and I spent some time with her too. We did have some moments later on (probably 8-10 weeks after they were born) when she said she wished it was like before. We made sure to do some things with her one-on-one. That helped alot. I know that there are lots of good books too. I kinda wish we had read some of those too (I think maybe we only did one? Can't remember which). It hasn't always been easy, but for the most part, it's really great. The moments when they play, hug, dance are amazing. Chat Icon Chat Icon The morning I went to have Chat Icon Chat Icon , we left super early. My mom was here with DD, but DD insisted we wake her before we go (i should have resisted that in hindsight). She was hysterical crying. I bawled the whole way to the hospital. It was awful. I was such a mess, thinking "what have we done to her?!?!?" Silly hormones. Chat Icon

Good luck, it will all work out!! And they will (hopefully) end up the best of friends. Chat Icon

Re: Those with an older DC...

My son just turned 3 when my twins came 6 weeks ago. I just got a double. I have a carrier for one twin amd my son and the other can sit in the stroller when it's just me. I didn't get a triple.

No big present but tons of little presents from family and friends. Plus if the twins got stuffed animals or books for gifts I just let my son have them if it made him happy!

My son has had some potty issues that started when I was away frm him in the hospital. Don't think it is bc of the twins though. Although my lack of spare time has prolonged the process of correcting it.

All and all my son has done great and adores his brothers. He doesn't bother with them too much and that's fine. He really does love them always talks about them and includes them in stories and pictures. He is not really jealous and that is what I was most afraid of. I'm so relieved that all turned out fine:)

Didn't read anything. Opps!

My son was just over 2 1/2 when my twins were born.
I didn't get a triple. He would walk with me or if we had a big trip or long day out i kept his single stroller. We only used it a handful of times. I also bought the board for the back of the city mini that he could stand on. He used that a little more often, but still not a ton. He likes to walk.

The adjustment for him wasn't too bad. He got spoiled by everyone in our life, i didn't buy him anything in particular from the babies. They were in the NICU so he never saw them in the hospital. Also it was the height of the swine flu craze when i had them so they wouldn't let him visit me, but i did have a few things in my bad for him before i knew that (thomas coloring book, monster trucks etc.)

My girls Chat Icon Chat Icon were 3 1/2 when my dd was born. No regression at all.
I didn't use a stroller for them, but never went out by myself with the 3 of them that required a lot of walking.

If I did I would have my husband or mom use the double for them.

He is going to love them. Don't worry.

Re: Those with an older DC...

DS was 2y 9m when my twins were born. He got booted out of the stroller then and adjusted really well.

I didn't deal with any major regression from him either. And at that point he was even already potty trained.

I did notice his tantrums were a little worse when we first came home from the hospital but I just think it was due to his schedule being uprooted and the constant visitors coming and going.

Once DH went back to work and things slowed down here he went right back to his old self. And was always willing to help when it came to his little sisters. I think making him feel like a part of it was important. He'd get me a new diaper or a onesie out of their drawer, etc.
