Skipping cereal?
Dd is ebf and is 5.5 months old.
Did anyone skip baby cereal and go straight to solids like sweet potato, avocado, banana?
If so can you please explain how you did it and what else you introduced, also what age?
Thanks!

Skipping cereal?
There is no rules. If you want to skip cereal I would just pick a food and go for it. Try it for a few days to check for allergy. Whether you start with cereal or fruit or a veggie how to feed them is all the same. They will only eat what they are hungry for so start with a small amount and work up.

Re: Skipping cereal?
Why? Cereal is the least allergenic and irritating. It's a great source of iron. It also teaches the kid how to eat with something that tastes like milk.
I'm sure you could skip it, but it's a good conversation to have with your pediatrician

Re: Skipping cereal?
I'm skipping cereal, just think that other foods would offer more nutrition and give my baby better practice eating. I plan to follow baby led weaning.

Skipping cereal?
I was advised to skip cereal. Rice hsd arsenic and oatmeal introduced too early can cause allergies later on.
I started with orange veggies. They are the easiest to digest and nutritious. I did sweet potatoes, carrots and squash. Sweet potatoes and squash- bake then puree and add water to desired consistency Carrots- steam then puree add water to desired consistency
Google wholesomefoods. Theres a great website just dont know the exact address.

The reason why is bc my pediatrician suggested it in the first place which got me thinking, she said she starts veggies, fruits, meats, then grains, dairy, nuts and soy last as they are the most allergenic.
Additionally I keep reading how rice cereal constipates a lot of babies and how it will fill them up but isn't nutritious.
So based on these things I think I am going to skip. And to the above poster my dr did say to start with orange foods too. Carrots, sweet potatoes, squashes and so on.
So for those who skipped I was wondering what age did you introduce? Over the weekend I randomly gave her some ripe avocado and she was opening her mouth like a baby bird for more! I just did a tiny bit to see what would happen.

Re: Skipping cereal?
We did.
We went right to fruit and veggie purees in no particular order with no waiting time in between.
At 6 months we introduced avocado, banana, apple, pear, etc. We went with what we could find that was organic and seasonal.

Skipping cereal?
You an start whenever. Just look to see that they are food ready otherwise it will not be a fun experience for you or the baby. Food ready is when they have an interest and based on the reaction to the avocado your DC is ready.
I started at 4 mons. My sis started her DS at 6 months. It is more about when you are comfy. This is not an exact science. Go with your mommy gut and 95% of the time you will be fine.

Skipping cereal?
we skipped cereal and started with avacado which my dd loves still at 10 months old. they are linking cereal to childhood obesity and say that it is like giving the baby a spoonful of sugar.

Skipping cereal?
I started at 5 months. 1 tablesppon at first, watered down to get her bidy used to digesting.
Also introduce 1 new food at a time and feed the same one gor 3-4 dsys before introducing another. Look for any digestion issues or sllergies.
Good luck! Its a lot of fun!

Re: Skipping cereal?
I would mix it with the breastmilk or formula and keep it thin. Are you making your baby food or buying jars? There's lists of least allergenic foods on that wholesome sight. So I would start with those foods. Usually level 1 in the jars is the right consistency and has the least allergy potential. We started with cereals and DD loves the oatmeal, just mentioning it because you may want to try it. Daycare mixed apples and oatmeal for her too. It just sounds like a nice breakfast.

Re: Skipping cereal?
I think I'm skipping too. (going to ped next week) They are on poly tri sol so they get extra iron. I bought a few jars of organic food (sweet potatos and bananas). I think I'll wait til 5 mo. Twin 2 has had oatmeal because we tried it in bottles for reflux. It didnt help that so I stopped. It's hard to say if she was alergic because she just spit everything up back then anyway.

Where did you hear that about oatmeal cereal?
All of my kids had cereal early on, my eldest started at 4 months and my 2 middle children were both introduced oatmeal by 1.5 months due to severe reflux issues and spoon fed it between 5-6 months. NONE of my kids have allergies and I don't see to relationship to introducing oatmeal cereal to early and allergies.
Cereal for us was a necissity for 2 of my children and 1 got it up until a year old mixed with veggies and other foods we prepared.
You can skip cereal, it's not a must. We did veggies then fruits, but there is no set schedule.

The new recommendation is to not start solid foods before 6 months (which changed from 2.5 years ago with my DD when we could start at 4 months, so it is ever changing)

Re: Skipping cereal?
We tried but then ped said to give the cereal b/c of the iron content... We skipped rice and went to oatmeal.
She still has oatmeal mixed with fruit for breakfast.
I give rice cereal when she has loose stool.

Skipping cereal?
We started off on sweet potatoes and she loved it. Then the next week we went to carrots and her baby sitter requested cereal so I bought some for her and she mashes it up with banana. DD loves it.

Re: Skipping cereal?
I didn't skip cereal, but I never gave rice cereal with DS2. It was so binding on DS1 that I didn't want to take the chance with DS2. I started oatmeal with DS2 at 6 months and then gave him bananas, avocado and apples. It took quite a while to get DS2 to even take food from me. He would eat some food from others, but only wanted to nurse from me.
