Experienced distance runners... a question
I trained up to 14 miles then ran the caumsett 25k on March 3rd. Long run the following weekend was only 7 miles (only had an hour away from kids). Kings Park 15k race this past Sat. Ran that pretty fast but was comfortable. I ran 5 miles on Monday, did 20 miles spin & 3 mile run on Tuesday. What would you do for the rest of the week...I have the Suffolk Half on Sunday. I need to PR. I have my plan but I tend to overdo it sometimes. Just wanted to get some opinions.

Hi, not sure I qualify as experienced, but I would do less as opposed to more. Extra mileage at this point is not going to give you a better shot at PR-ing, training is done and you raced a hilly course this past weekend. Race week I tend to do shorter runs, some a bit faster to stay sharp, but I also throw in one extra rest day. Not sure what you plan to today, but if it were me, I'd do elliptical or similar, run short distance tomorrow, rest Fri and maybe 2 easy miles Sat or rest again. I usually lay off the weights as the week moves on if there's a race. Or you can rest today, run short tomorrow, rest Fri, easy run, walk, elliptical Sat. Good luck, I'm sure you'll more than PR. Haven't decided if I'm doing it yet.

I agree with this. My half marathon PR I barely ran the 2 weeks before because I had a few medical tests and was waiting for the results.

Yes I am def cutting down on my mileage this week. Was planning on yoga tonight, short run and sculpting tomorrow, spin on Friday (skipping my normal Friday body pump) and then elliptical Saturday.
I never made it to yoga (worked late).
Should I skip sculpting tomorrow too? (I did sculpting and body pump before both of my raves mentioned above with no issues. PRed both of them without much effort),
ETA: problem solved. I woke up very sick! Rest it is!!

I'm a bit late to this discussion but I definitely say rest. Last year when I ran my half marathon PR at the NYC Half I was coming off basically 2 weeks of very little running due to sickness. This year I trained religiously and did the Tuesday and Thursday short runs before the the half and didn't have a great race. I value rest days because you did the training leading up to this---be as fresh (and well rested) as possible for your half.

Yeah, I know textbook would have to rest/taper but with 4 distance races within 5 weeks I kinda have to run through, kwim? But I was suck and forced to rest more than planned. Finished with a PR (barely) of 1:46:36, but missed my goal if 1:45. Blame that on my fever! Boo!

A PR is a PR, even if it was a one-second PR, and I would be THRILLED to PR, especially being sick. I have not PR'd in a half in over 2 years, although I don't race nearly as often as you do. You have plenty of time to run 1:45, it's not as if you were 10 minutes off your goal. Plus, the wind this weekend was brutal. So you had a lot against you. Be proud; many people, including myself, would probably not PR racing while sick...and for what it's worth, sometimes it's the forced rest that does us better in the end. If you had pushed it this past week, you might not have PRd.

Thanks but I know if I wasn't sick I could have done it. I was at the same time at the 13.1 mile mark of the Caumsett 25k as my race yesterday. Difference being I wasn't trying at all at Caumsett (and then ran 2.5 more miles) and I was trying very hard yesterday. That's what is disappointing... But you girls are right. PR is a PR and I will get that 1:45 next time.
