Opt Out Spin off - Common Core Gr 3 - 5
Parents of 3rd - 5th grade do you see a shift in your child's curriculum? DS is in 4th grade and he spends sooo much time on ELA and Math, very little time on Science, Social Studies or Creative Writing. Is this the same in your child's class?

Yup. 4th grade here. Lots & lots of ELA time.
It doesn't surprise me given NYS decided to base financial incentives on children's performance on a test.
I feel bad for the teachers because they seem truly torn over teaching the kids what they need to know going forward, the basics, etc & inspiring the kids vs making sure the test scores rise from fall to spring.

Opt Out Spin off - Common Core Gr 3 - 5
Test scores are going to go down parents need to be prepared. My sisters district already had a meeting and said 30 percent drop because this is what was seen in another state that first gave he common core tests. Just reading the questions to answer the questions are more complex. This is all because they want to be more competitive with other countries. I think we are going in the wrong direction.

Yup it's horrible and this new math will make the higher level Math more difficult for them according to one of the math teachers in my building

That is so sad. What's next Social Studies then Science. My 4th grade Cub Scouts were so excited to do experiments to earn their Science Badge. We did simple things that previous year students did in school. Teachers do not have time to teach in a fun creative way anymore. We are killing the spirit and thirst for learning in our children.

And then we are going to have to fund remedial Math and ELA positions and take students that may have been average in the past out of the classroom for another period where they will miss something else like science, social studies or creative writing Oh I forgot those subjects don't matter!

The math program is HORRIBLE, BUT my daughter still has Social Studies (they even had a full day program with a local indian tribe) and science experiments (which they should since there is a state science practical in May).

Our children aren't even learning how to write script anymore. I hate where education is going. The children are the ones to lose. My dd is struggling so much this year (3rd grade). I too feel badly for the teachers.

Opt Out Spin off - Common Core Gr 3 - 5
My son is in 5th grade and 99% of his homework is ELA and Math.. My son was very sick last month and missed almost 2 weeks of school, which turned into a huge problem because of the state wides. Fast foward to him going back to school, now he is having panic attacks everyday (non-school days also) The stress of the state wides are out of control.. My son used to have a IEP but tested out in 3rd grade, I have been fighting to get it back (he is PDD-NOS/ ADHD/ has a speech delay). I would love to Opt out of the state wides for him..
