I did 10miles today!!!! (need some advice)

I've been at a steady 6-7miles for months now.

Then on Wed something came over me & I felt overwhelmed to run 8miles (I was watching the story about Martin) so, 8 was the goal! I actually cried when I finished, so I definitely was motivated! (I NEVER ran that much before)

Today I all of a sudden got into my best rhymth & ran 10miles. I'm not fast (took me 92min 25sec). But I felt great!

I did notice some knee soreness around 8.5miles, so I dropped my speed a little. Then I was fine the rest.

Does that mean I need more training?
Would running outside be more natural?

I'm SO FEARFUL to injure myself & then can't run at all!

(I have yet to finish "run less, run faster")

i'm still new to the world of running. everything i read says to not increase more than 10% per week. so going from 6-7, to 8, then to 10 in a short amount of time might be the reason for the knee pain.

plus, i've read that you should only do one long run per week.

my advise... because i have had knee pain, is to back off for a bit and increase slowly. it's better to get there slowly than to hurt yourself and have to take a lot of time off.

also, i prefer to run outside.

congratulations on reaching 10 miles!!
i know it was a big deal for me when i covered 10 miles!!

Yeah.....I do know I made a big jump, but I was in such a zone. Chat Icon

It was so huge to hit double digits. (i took a picture to show my hubby)

Maybe I will someday do a 1/2 marathon after all! Chat Icon

It's hard for me to run outside, because there are so few big developments & I'm not about run on the 2 lane country roads Chat Icon

There is a lake with a trail (7miles) around it. I'm hoping to get runs in there with the hubby (I'm a scardy-cat to go alone during the week).

if you can do 10 miles, you can do a HM!

just be careful with your knees and spend some time outside. running on a treadmill and running outside are two different animals!

oh, finally, you'll find that race-day adrenaline will take you a lot farther than you ever though

When I still lived in NY I switched from dreadmil to roads with little lapse (& I was only doing 5 miles). So I'm hoping that if I can do this much now, it'll be as quick.Chat Icon

What is your current weekly mileage? I would think the 8 miler was not a big deal in all honesty.

In regards to the 10 miler, I bet you were tired and changed your gait/stride, which is causing your knee to bother you. Ice tonight and take it easy tomorrow.

First congrats on hitting 10 miles!! How awesome! Please know I have run 3 half marathons and have not done a training run longer than 10/10.5 miles so you are certainly on you way and should feel confident you can do a half.

When I first started increasing my runs to 8-10 miles I also had knee pain. Make sure its not your sneakers, definitely ice, cut back a little this week and I also would take ibuprofen of some sort if the pain really hurt. While at work I actually bought some of those ice packs that you shake and pop so I could ice while sitting at my desk.

Also you mentioned trail...awesome..can't beat trail to help alleviate pain in knee/joints.

good luck and congrats!

Re: I did 10miles today!!!! (need some advice)

I never ran 8 miles before...that's why it's a big deal for me. And then 10 was huge!

I don't hurt at all now, it was during that I could feel a little soreness around the 8.5 mile. So I slowed my pace a little & was fine.

I'm currently running 3xs (maybe 4) a week (6 miles minimum each time)

I need to date my sneakers or find my order, I don't think they are that old (<6 mo).

in doing the math, you've put over 400 miles on those shoes... you might want to get new shoes.

There is math in running Chat Icon (jk)
I guess I'm not used to running so regularly. I was hoping to get to my local running store this weekend.

I've always exercised, but with 2 kids, a tough DH schedule, & a car accident in Nov...I'll apologize if my triumphs that are big for me aren't big for others

8 miles is definitely a HUGE accomplishment! I hope you did not think my post was downplaying it. I just meant I do not think it negatively affected your knee. With your current mileage (~24 miles/week), I would think an increase of 2-3 miles would be within the "safe" 10% range. Make sure you ice and take advil - even if it does not hurt right now - it will reduce any potential swelling.

If you can do 10 miles, you can definitely do a half!

I agree. Definitely check your sneakers . It may just be time for a new pair. I really don't think a jump from 8 to 10 is that big, personally, to cause knee pain. It's not like you jumped from 4 to 10. Kwim?! I really think it may be your sneakers or your gait or stride changed during the run. Plus marathoners and half marathoners jump miles from their training runs with no problems so I'm thinking it may not be due to increasing mileage.

And you can definitely do a half marathon. I never train past 10 miles!!!! Good for you!!! I was thrilled the first time I made it to 10 or even 8 miles!!!! You never believe you can run that far so I completely get it!! It's awesome to see miles you've never seen before!! And it is a big deal!!!! Congrats!!!!

Re: I did 10miles today!!!! (need some advice)

Thank you all for the encouragement!

I've never been into a formal training routine, hence why I never committed to a race. I just exercise for the enjoyment, but now I want to add the "group" setting of it, KWIM.

I'm happy to say I didn't wake with any soreness or pain!

My goal is to get new sneakers!!! & outdoors!!!

(I'm glad I asked!)
