The best advice I was given when I decided to make big lifestyle changes was to set goals for myself. Small ones that will keep you motivated.
When I'm tired and don't feel like working out, I think about how great I feel AFTER I finish the workout and try not to think about how I feel at that moment.

These things have made those changes into a habit for me. Now I freak out if I can't work out! I schedule my workouts ahead of time this way there is no question whether or not I'm gonna work out that day. I'm doing it!
I also prep my food the night before so I know what I'm going to eat and can control my portion size.
The BEST tool for me has been the
My Fitness Pal app too! I def. recommend it!

Don’t be overly restrictive. It’s a lifestyle change. It’s forever after today. It means making healthier choices every day, but it doesn’t mean you never indulge in things you love. Just do it in moderation, eat smaller portions. Eat REAL FOOD, not diet food. Cut down on the processed junk, Make the time for yourself to do something for you, walking, cooking a healthy meal, stretching, whatever it is.

If you ’cheat’ and have something ‘bad’ it does not mean ‘the whole day is shot’ and you might as well continue to eat bad the rest of the day. It means you indulged in something as a treat and you move on with the rest of the day as is, you don’t do extra cardio or restrict calories later, you had a treat, enjoy it, don’t feel guilty, don’t dwell over it. Enjoy it & move on. You’ll find when you allow yourself to have something here and there you are more likely to stick to the healthy lifestyle over all. I don’t pig out on holidays, at parties or special occasions, because I can have something whenever I want. It’s about moderation.

Please share your best advice!

i think J9 did a great job explaining it.

setting small attainable goals makes a big difference... you don't have to worry about losing 50lb, you just have to concentrate on the first 5.
you don't have to do 100 push ups, you just have to do 5.

prepping food the night before is a big deal as well.
i know that when i don't plan, i make huge mistakes.

also, don't just weigh yourself... measure yourself. there will be times when the scale doesn't move or it moves in the wrong direction. you need to be reminded that the scale is only one way to measure the changes.

finally, what kind of movement do you already like? if you can't imagine doing crossfit, but you like to dance... start with a dance-type aerobics workout. do something you enjoy, because if you hate it, you're not going to stick with it. the weather is nice and you have a cute little one. maybe start by spending more time in the park chasing each other around, ride a bike with a basket/seat for the baby.

good luck

Re: Please share your best advice!

you already got great advice here and i am by NO means an expert but just recently lost 12 lbs and am in the best shape i've been in in a long time. for me what worked this time was:

-upping my protein intake

-carrying around a large water bottle to up my water intake

-not just doing cardio anymore and incorporating weight training (made HUGE difference)

-allowing myself more wiggle room to eat more freely on weekends-this way i am more able to keep on track during the week and not feel like i have no freedom. this has really helped.

-weighing myself weekly to be accountable.

-using how my clothing feels to really assess how well i'm doing or not.

good luck!

This is absolutely my approach, and I think it's the best way to achieve long-term success. If you take an "all or nothing" approach, and anything less of perfection isn't good enough, you set yourself up to fail. Looking at things in a long-term way is key -- so one party or one big meal or one vacation or one week's weight gain doesn't matter to the big picture. If your overall trend is weight loss (or healthy eating, or consistent workouts, or whatever your goal is), then you are doing well!

I also think support is very key. You absolutely have to want to change your eating and exercise habits for yourself, otherwise you won't stick to it. But having others who are "in it" with you is helpful (or at least it has been for me).

I've lost 25 lbs since January, but I got my mom to re-join WW with me, and we've been going to meetings together, sharing recipes and tips, etc. Also, last year, when I was training for a 5K, I had a friend who signed up for the race with me, and we would do our runs together when we could. It really kept me going at times when I might have said "I'm tired today, forget it!" And I find it easier to make healthy choices when surrounded by like-minded people. I recently went to a girls' night out at a wine bar with some moms from DS's preschool who are very into fitness and clean eating, etc. We enjoyed ourselves, had our drinks, etc., but I found I held myself in check more easily because everyone else wasn't "overdoing it." Peer pressure is a GOOD thing when it comes to healthy eating and exercise!
