Birthing/Labor/After Labor Class??
At my doc's office there's a sign that suggests signing up for their pre-birth, labor, and post-birth information seminar. So, DH actually suggested we sign up for it - he was all for it. It is $175 which I was kind of bummed about but it from 10-4 so it's a lot of information. They let you keep a ton of materials and stuff like that.
Has anyone done something like this? If so, did you think it was worth it? Did you feel it was informative? WHEN did you do it during your pregnancy?
They have 6/2 and 7/7... both Sunday's which works for us. But 6/2 is the day after a HUGE all-day work event for me and I didn't know if I'd have my full energy/attention. But 7/7 is the long 4th of July weekend. Hmm. I picked 7/7 only b/c 6/2 I'll be exhausted b/c of the work function the day before, I just know it. Thoughts?

Re: Birthing/Labor/After Labor Class??
I haven't done it before but did sign up fora class. They offered one on a Sunday all day or 4 Tuesday nights, so I did the 4 Tuesday nights knowing that after the first few hours I would loose attention lol
They told me it's best to do it about a month before your due date
ETA: the classes include lamaze and pain management...they also cover induction and medications, etc.

Birthing/Labor/After Labor Class??
I took a childbirth class and it was a waste of money. IMO all the books I got were a waste also. Nothing prepares you to take care of your child because your child is like no other. An this is coming from someone who never changed a diaper before my DS. And held my first baby when my sister gave birth a month before.
Just like no birth is like another. Actual labor....the nurses are amazing. They walk you through each push.
I wish I could get back my money and wasted day.

Birthing/Labor/After Labor Class??
We took a child caring class, a breastfeeding seminar, and lamaze. The lamaze class was the only thing we found helpful so far. The child caring class went over everything from putting the baby to sleep, to feedings, to bathing, except it was just a ped telling us what to do and honestly it was his opinion that I didn't agree with a lot. I also would have liked more hands on. The only thing was changing the diaper and it wasn't even that real being that they didn't tell you about powder or wipes or ointments or anything. The breastfeeding seminar made me anxious being that I don't want to feel pressured into breastfeeding and the instructor made it sound like if I don't breastfeed my baby won't grow up to be the man he should be.
We found lamaze to be the most helpful. She went over every kind of scenario that could possibly happen when in labor and anything you can ask for. She went over pre-labor into after labor and it was GREAT. DH gave me a hard time about the other two classes that I have to agree with him on but the lamaze he even was happy with.
I don't know if this helps at all but our lamaze class was an ALL day thing too and it really was VERY informative!

Re: Birthing/Labor/After Labor Class??
They offer this at Stony Brook hospital for free. Either on three weeknights (the first three wednesdays of the month from 7-9) or an all inclusive class on a weekend.
It's a breastfeeding class, labor/delivering class and then post-partum info class.

They offer the preparation for childbirth class at LIJ for $185 a couple and then you get the breastfeeding class for free. I'm debating on if we should take this class.

Re: Birthing/Labor/After Labor Class??
My dr office offered it. It was 2 classes for 3 hours each. The first was a birthing class and they went over everything from stages of labor to breathing to breastfeeding to breathing techniques. Being a first time mom I found it very helpful. The second class was a tour of the hospital and again they showed you everything. I felt very prepared by the time our daughter was born.

I disagree with this, it really depends upon the nurse you get and the practice you're with. The first time around I took the labor class and it went all out the window because I had an emergency c/s. This time around I'm going for a vbac and am going to take the labor class again (in addition to switching practices, hospitals and getting doulas). Every experience is so different, it can't be a bad thing to be more educated *in case* you need it, KWIM?

Birthing/Labor/After Labor Class??
Crashing - I didn't take a class (DH was studying for a major exam at the time and there were no classes that fit into both of our schedules).
I borrowed the Laugh and Learn video from the libary and I found it useful. I had wonderful Drs and nurses (well, one I didn't love so much) as well to help guide me through it.

Re: Birthing/Labor/After Labor Class??
I did a labor class and thought it was useful - it just helped me understand what to expect and it eased my fears about labor. I didn't remember anything they said during labor lol, the labor nursed help you with everything so you will be fine, I just felt it helped with my anxiety prior to giving birth.

Re: Birthing/Labor/After Labor Class??
I took a class through Baby Bellies with my 1st. It was a long day- but I found it very informative. I enjoyed it- even though when the time came- everything I learned went out the window and I wound up with a c-section anyway.
I've heard great things about the DVDs that are out there too.
