Question about "themed" races (diva, color, etc)

I don't mean this in an offensive way at all.... because 13 miles is 13miles, ran or walked, & I'm glad to see people getting interested in being active....

But I'm just asking...do these races incorporate rests & such?

I'm under the impression that a lot of these new fitness races are a little frilly to attract people.

Not sure what would lead you to believe that there were scheduled rests - especially in the Diva half.

From what I know, no. But things like the color run are not timed or competitive races. They are active events (and a lot of fun). And the ones I've done attract a lot of people - usually sold out- of all ages, and fitness levels. Some runs are just meant to be fun!

And even in competitive races there are always lots of people walking.

I agree. Honestly I don't find "themed" races any different than any other race. Some are timed and are competitive. Some races aren't timed and are for fun but most half marathons are timed. There aren't scheduled breaks. There are water stops and such but you can jog or run through them.

The race is as easy or hard as you make it. If you choose to stop you can, but some people run the whole thing straight through. Themed doesn't necessarily mean easier- it may have more fun and entertainment to it, but it's still a race. There are competitive runners at these events as well.

Again, I'm NOT trying to belittle them, or make anyone believe they are less physical. I agree about it being your own challenge.

(heck, I'm running my 1st 1/2 in the fall, & by no means plan to be first, but for me doing it & not stopping is my goal)Chat Icon

I gues when I've read that you get to stop for colors, or tiaras & such. I got the impression that the almost purposefully incorporate rests into it. Again, obviously all the recent explosion of these themed races have a purpose.....and it's getting people active! I think it's wonderful.
I know many people who are struggling to stay fit & motivated, & I'm trying to get an idea of these races, before I recommend them to some people for a goal.

That's why I am ask for insight from those who have participated.

I can tell you the Diva there are no rests. As you run by you grab a tiara and boa. I held onto it the last 1/2 mile because I didn't want to waste my time putting it in. It took less than a second to grab it from someone. If I didn't have a set time I wanted to finish, I may have stopped, let them put it on me and rested for a minute. But I wanted to finish in 2 hrs so I just grabbed and went.

I've never done a color run or a mud run, so I can't comment on those. The mud runs and spartan races seem to be geared more towards people who want to rest their endurance. The color run seems like its just a fun, athletic event. That's just what I've taken away from it.

I've never done the color run, but was planning on doing it this year, so I had read a lot about it. You don't stop for the color. There are "color zones" and as you run (or walk or jog) through those zones, there are color throwers who toss the color on you as you go by.

Re: Question about "themed" races (diva, color, etc)

I race a lot but I like themed races too. I don't look at them as my "A" races though, usually I do them for fun. For example, I did the Color Run last year with friends that don't usually run so I took it easy on the course.

I don't look at them as anything bad, they may just cater to more people that don't run fast or for long periods of time than your normal 1/2 marathon.
