kitten with ear mites

DH found a kitten and we're going to keep him. We took him to the vet and he has ear mites. The vet said to keep him away from our other cat for 3 weeks! Anyone have experience with this. Right now we are keeping him in a bathroom. I am super paranoid about our other cat getting them, so I feel like the kitten isn't really getting a lot of attention, and 3 weeks is a long time to keep him in a bathroom. Also, I'm pregnant. Has anyone taken in a feral cat while pregnant? Any extra precautions I should be taking? Everyone washes their hands after we touch him. I'm not cleaning any litter boxes either.

TIA!!

Ear mites can be a huge problem. However, one of our cats had ear mites, and we are a multi-cat household. The vet said that if possible, obviously he should be away from them, but if it's not possible, then it's not possible. Fortunately, none of our other cats got them.

The one who had them, Jaspur, had such a bad case, and they would not go away. His ear kept filling up with fluid, and it had to be drained. It's now permanently damaged...internally, the ear is fine, but it will never stand up straight again. If you can manage to keep the kitten away from your other cat, I would...just to prevent something really drastic from happening.

Thanks. They are separated, but 3 weeks seems like such a long time to keep the kitten in the bathroom. I feel so bad. Would you change your clothes after holding/petting the cat who had the ear mites? I read that they can be spread that way. I'm going to ask the vet for more info tomorrow.

Hmmm...I actually never heard that!

I just saw your response now, so I'm guessing you figured out what to do by now lol

I did, thanks! The vet just said to keep them separated and wash our hands. No need to change clothes.

Re: kitten with ear mites

I'm guessing the kitten is on ear drops for the mites. You should just be sure to have your dh administer the drops and not touch the kitten around his ears for a couple of hours. I believe the stuff to kill the ear mites is a pesticide and I'd be very cautious around getting that on my skin, especially if you are in the 1st trimester.

Good luck!
