Formula feeding and pumping

I want to try to see how I can formula feed while adding breast milk to each feeding. For those who hand done this how exactly did you do it? Did you feed them separately or mix it in? How often did you pump? Thanks!

Formula feeding and pumping

I definitely supplemented my pumping with formula now and then to keep up with my twins.

In the earlier weeks, I split whatever I pumped between the two kids, and gave them each a bottle with that. If more was needed, then they would get a topper of formula though typically the breastmilk was enough.

Once I wasn't pumping a zillion times a day (i started with every 3 hours basically, so about 8-9 times a day) and had built up a supply, I'd give them each full breast milk bottles and then sub out a formula bottle for an evening feed when my husband would take over.

I pumped for about 6 months, though towards the end, they started to get more and more formula bottles (as my DS was totally anti frozen BM, so the supply I saved up went all to my DD who definitely didn't care if it was fresh or frozen) until they were only on like 1 milk bottle and the rest were formula.

I never mixed BM and formula because I could save any extra BM they didn't finish for the next feed (which i didn't realize till about 3 months in), and I hated hated hated the idea of wasting any breastmilk if they didn't finish their bottles. But I am not sure if there is any scientific reason not to mix the two.

Why are you adding formula? do you not make enough milk? the less you nurse or pump the less milk your body will produce. Right after I gave birth I nursed but knew by baby wasn't getting much so I would give her one of those Simalac bottles. Slowly milk came in and I pumped it so I can see exactly how much my baby was getting.. I would ADD it too the formula and as more breast milk came in I used less and less formula and now Im exclusively giviing her breast milk.
