question for those of you that live in splits

Do you have a tv in the lower level den and in the main level living room? DH and I are having a debate about this.

We have a big screen tv in our lower level den, as well as in our finished basement. We keep our main floor living room as a formal living room, no tv!

We have a TV in the lower level den. Nothing in the living room upstairs. DH was initially against the idea, but has never complained so it must not bother him.
My FIL on the other hand ALWAYS complains about it when they come over.

I like it that way.

Yes, TV on main level and TV on den level -- I like to watch TV/have something on in the background when I cook!

question for those of you that live in splits

We have our tv in the lower level den. We made our upper room into a formal dining room so we don't have a tv in there.

Re: question for those of you that live in splits

Several friends/family have splits and they have TVs in both.

However, the upstairs is the more formal living area.

DH and I debated over this for the first few years. I wanted to keep it more "formal". After a while I decided that it was crazy to have a room that we wouldn't utilize as much. I pay a lot to live here and want to use every square foot of my house as often as possible lol
So we have the tv on the wall in the LR now and we do take advantage and use the room all the time. So glad I let him win this one :)

We looked at splits and this is what we would do

Re: question for those of you that live in splits

My parents have a split - TV in the kitchen & downstairs den, but the LR is formal.

I personally would have no use for a formal LR in a 'normal' size home (unless I had a palacial estate, I think it's a total waste of livable space)

so i'd probably put another TV in the living room.

I don't live in a split but my bf and my neighbor both do. They both have TVs in both living spaces. I personally never understood the need for a formal living room that you rarely use, especially with kids.

Re: question for those of you that live in splits

I have a TV in both the den and the living room. The den is where we spend all day with the kids - all their toys are in there, it has access to outside and it is right off my kitchen. It gets a beating.
My "formal" living room is not formal at all - it has nice but comfortable furniture and it is where DH and I go as soon as the kids are in bed. I have no desire to spend any more hours in a room full of toys! MY living room is strictly adult.

we have a split and we have one up and down - we made our upstairs one big great room - so the tv upstairs is smaller but spend most of our time there

at night to watch a movie we go downstairs or just relax away from the toys

our den is more like an office/workout room so we have a smaller tv in there, and a bigger tv in our main level living room. we finished our basement last year and when DS is big enough, that will be his "playroom" and we will put a tv down there too.

Re: question for those of you that live in splits

thanks for the feedback! We're using our lower level as a playroom. We're having trouble figuring out how to fit a tv and couches into the main level living room so we were debating having a formal living room with no tv but we really want our own adult space to watch tv.

Our lower level is a playroom also and have a TV in both levels.
Like the PP, I wanted a more "formal" LR upstairs without a TV but DH didn't agree with me. I'm now glad I went with his suggestion because I like having the TV on when I'm cooking/cleaning upstairs, having the adult space to watch TV (not surrounded by a million toys), and it comes in handy when DH wants to watch his sports and I want to watch my HBO shows Chat Icon

We don't have a tv on our "middle level." We have one in the den (which is one the half underground level) and one in the basement, but not on our living room, dining room, kitchen level.

Re: question for those of you that live in splits

We have a tv in the den. This space is designated for the kids. We originally planned on having no tv in the living room but we ended up with having a 60". I want to live in every inch of my house. If we kept our living room "formal" we would never use it. When we want it to be more formal, we just shut off the tv.

Re: question for those of you that live in splits

I don't have a split but we have a living room and a den and we have a tv in both. I was against the tv in the living room for a long time, but agreed to put it in there. I'm happy we did - that way when we have friends over the kids shows stay in den and the adults if want can watch a game or something.

we don't have a TV in the living room. We have one in the den and one in the basement as well. Personally I like not having the tv in the living room - we still hang out there, DS will play with toys, when I have company over we are there, we use it alot and I like not having the TV as a distraction.
