Help! Pooping on the potty
DD has been out of diapers for almost a month, but keeps pooping in her underwear.
She did it on the potty once when she just started wearing underwear, we made a huge deal over it. I gave her two new toys (from the dollar store) right when she did it. Then next day (bc she did it right before bed) we took her to eat, and to the dollar store to pick out another toy.
Since then she will only do it in her pants. I have promised her everything but a pony at this point and she still won't even try. If I catch her going and try to bring her to the potty, so screams and yells and runs away from the bathroom.
The last two times she did it, we made her sit in her room for a few minutes. I know that's not the right thing to do, but I don't know what else to do at this point.
Help! I know this is a process, but I at least want to get her to sit on the potty and try it.

Re: Help! Pooping on the potty
For me, I put DS back in pullups until he pooped consistentaly on the potty. He was pee trained long before he was poopy trained and I was throwing out underwear left and right. In the end, when he was ready, he was ready. (although i did start "encouraging" him with candy that he was never allowed to have outside of halloween (tootsie rolls).

Re: Help! Pooping on the potty
Same exact situation for us. She is perfect with peeing. No accidents, wakes up totally dry. She only pooped on the potty once at home and maybe twice at school. She will continue to poop in her panties no matter how much we talk about it, how much we put her on the potty, how much incentives I offer her. I feel like when they are ready, they are ready. Just like with the pee. I never did anything special, one day it just clicked and that was it. She was ready. Like a PP said I try to keep her in pull ups when I suspect a poop is on the way- cleaning underwear is just gross!

Help! Pooping on the potty
It took awhile and some bribery to get DS to go. He was the same way.
Luckily, I was able to tell when he was going it and catch him in the act and move him to the potty. Sometimes he would continue to go on the potty and other times he didn't.
One day though it just clicked!

Re: Help! Pooping on the potty
Same here. My DD is pretty much potty trained for pee (just wears a diaper overnight) but will not poop. She freaks out and begs for a diaper when she has to go. I hate to give in but she holds it and then that's an issue so for now we're allowing it.
We have a Lalaloopsy doll that she can see but can't touch and she knows she'll get it if she poops on the potty...no longer cares. We've also told her she can go to ToysRUs and pick out anything she wants. Whenever she ask for anything, we just say you know what you have to do...still nothing. Sigh, I guess it's just a waiting game.

Re: Help! Pooping on the potty
Another thing suggested by one of DS' therapists is that promising something after they go is too abstract. It needs to be instant gratification. (we put the candy in the bathroom).

Re: Help! Pooping on the potty
Thanks everyone. She goes mostly in the evening when we are home from work, so maybe I will try to put a pull up on her so there is less of a mess for me to clean up.
I do have a box of "prizes" that she knows she can pick from when she goes, so I will stick that in the bathroom and see if it helps!

Re: Help! Pooping on the potty
What helped my DS was explaining what poop is. The part of food that your body doesn't need anymore so it's like throwing it in the garbage like we do with trash (or something to that effect). I read that some kids are afraid that some part of them is leaving their body.
You can also try putting a pull up on her and putting her on the potty - let her poop in the pull up on the toilet so she gets used to the sitting part.

Re: Help! Pooping on the potty
Another suggestion may not be the most pleasant. Don't change her immediately when she poops in her pants. Let it stay there for 10 or 15 minutes so she can feel how yucky it is.

Re: Help! Pooping on the potty
Dd was the same way. She actually would ask to go on the potty and then get really anxious. She would get off and poop in her pull up. One day it just clicked. I did have a sticker chart in the bathroom and a bowl of small toys from party city (tattoos, little plastic toys etc) but honestly I think she just got it when she was ready. She still will occasionally go in her underwear if we are out having fun not near a bathroom but we just drive to Florida and she had no accidents the whole trip. She is 2.5.
