Upgrading electrical panel cost

I was just wondering if anyone had upgraded their electrical panel from 150 to 200? This is something we need to do in the near future, but we have no idea how much to expect to pay. Feel free to FM me if you don't want to disclose the amount on here. Thanks!

Yes, this comes up at a lot of inspections, and upgrading a panel (whether from 100 amps to 200 amps, or 150 amps to 200 amps) is usually said to cost in the range of $2K.

Upgrading from 150 to 200 amp is not a big change. If you're going to do it I suggest going to 300 amp. We upgraded from 75 amp to 200 amp with a sub panel and it cost us $2500 cash but that is on the low side since DH did most of the work himself and just have a licensed electrician do the sign off and power the panel.

I've never seen a house with 300 amp. I thought it was always 100 amp, 150 amp, and 200 amp. And while 100 amp is the "minimum" - it can be perfectly adequate for a smaller home or a home where a lot of things run on gas. I see a lot of brand new construction (large colonials) with CAC that are built with 150 amp service because they have gas heat, gas hot water, gas cooking, and have energy efficient appliances. But I didn't know 300 amps exist! I sell a lot of homes and I've never seen that.

My coworker has 300 amp but she added it. Her house only had 200 amp when she purchased it. It's really a 320/ 400a service. You'll need it when you son has a rock band in the garage and a pool.

I have a 200A service with a 100A subpanel right next to the main panel.

When I did my dormer, I had the 100A subpanel added in because the house already had 200A service. The 200A panel was older, but it was fine. If I would have had to do the full service during the dormer, I would have went with more than 200A.

I have a LOT of things that require power in my house and I pretty much have just about every breaker spot filled on both panels. I have a large 5 ton CAC system. I also have a separate ductless AC in my basement. I have a hot tub. I have a dedicated server/media room. I have two washers. Two dryers. Oil fired burner. 3500 square feet of living space when you factor in my finished basement. LIPA loves us.

wow! I can't believe you use every single breaker of your 300amp. We should've went straight to the 300amp. It's the installation that's expensive not the amperage. I might have to add another subpanel when my boys are older. DH is saving his whole set up of electric guitar, bass and amplifier for the boys. My neighbors will hate me when the day comes.

Re: Upgrading electrical panel cost

I probably have maybe 5 breakers free if I really examined it. But there is no doubt I would have filled up the primary 200A panel. I have a lot of breakers that are double.
